Michelle Randolph compares her 1923 and Landman characters – with one clear winner

1923 cast member Michelle Randolph also appeared in a streaming gem in Taylor Sheridan’s Landman, but her two characters from both shows couldn’t be more different.
The star plays Elizabeth (“Liz”) in the Yellowstone prequel series. As the romantic, passionate love interest of Jack Dutton, she certainly gets more than she bargained for when she joins the Dutton family on their dangerous ranch.
But back in November 2024, she also played Ainsley in Landman, the teenage daughter of landman Tommy Norris. Ainsley’s character quickly caught backlash from viewers for being hyper-sexualized.
However, Randolph stood by her character. And when she spoke to Dexerto about the comparisons between Liz and Ainsley, she even hinted towards which one was more fun to play.
Michelle Randolph laughs more with Landman character
In the build-up to 1923 Season 2, Randolph spoke to Dexerto about the success of 1923 and Landman. When asked which character she prefers, she gave a diplomatic answer.
“I have a really hard time comparing them,” she said. “I’d say, I mean, Ainsley is, it’s just different. She’s light and fun, and there’s not tragedy and heartbreak and the things that Elizabeth is going through.
“But I think I’m just so attached to the both of them that I wouldn’t say I enjoy playing one over the other. They’re just different, but I definitely laugh a lot more in scenes as Ainsley.”

When comparing the two roles, it’s not hard to see why there were more laughs with Ainsley Norris. With over-the-top dialog and an optimistic outlook on life and romance, the teenager is a whirlwind.
Liz, on the other hand, has suffered greatly in the Western TV show. In Season 1 alone, she was shot and experienced a miscarriage. Then, in 1923 Season 2 Episode 1, she came very close to being attacked by a mountain lion after suffering a long, hard winter in Montana.
Still, Randolph seems to think Liz will come through, telling Dexerto that the character “has this hopefulness in her that that never wavers.”
1923 Season 2 Episode 2 premieres on March 2 on Paramount+.
