According to a new report, Michael Bay is set to direct a new Transformers movie, coming off the back of two box office disappointments in the franchise.
It’s easy to forget how big Bay’s Transformers movies were: between the first film in 2007 and 2017’s The Last Knight, they grossed over $4.3 billion worldwide, with 2011’s Dark of the Moon making a whopping $1.1 billion on its own.
They weren’t critical darlings (in fact, they all have scores under 60% on Rotten Tomatoes), but they were enormous, pop-culture-defining spectacles that are some of the highest-grossing movies of all time.
Since Bay (who’s also working on a Skibidi Toilet movie) left the director’s chair, they’ve been mostly well-reviewed, but nowhere near as profitable. That may be about to change.
Michael Bay is coming back for a new Transformers movie
Bay is developing a new Transformers movie, according to Puck News, and he “wants to direct.”
“The franchise has atrophied without Bay, and he himself has not reached those box office heights
since,” the outlet noted, adding that Bay has also complained about struggling to get projects green-lit.
“Bay approached the studio last year to come back as a hands-on producer and possibly director, and he’s got writer Jordan VanDina working on a script,” the report continued.
Bay’s film is “one of five or so Transformers projects in development”, with Transformers One director Josh Cooley also “closing a deal to pursue a live-action take.”
Alongside two other ideas “in early stages”, the G.I. Joe crossover teased at the end of Rise of the Beasts is still on the table. Whatever happens, Paramount needs to get a movie in production by 2029, or it’d be at risk of losing the rights.
In an earlier interview with UNILAD, Bay recalled Steven Spielberg telling him to stop making Transformers movies after the third entry.
“I made too many of them. Steven Spielberg said, ‘Just stop at three’. And I said I’d stop. The studio begged me to do a fourth, and then that made a billion too,” he said.
“And then I said I’m gonna stop here. And they begged me again. I should have stopped. They were fun to do.”
