Malcom in the Middle reunion set to miss one original cast member

Malcolm in the Middle is finally returning for a new batch of episodes almost two decades since the show went off the air. However, the reunion will be missing one original cast member.

Season 7 of Malcolm in the Middle drew to a close in 2006, and with its conclusion, the show was seemingly done forever. 151 episodes over six years of the Wilkerson family’s life.

Ever since, there have been plenty of rumblings about a reunion of sorts, and the cast has appeared together on multiple occasions, but nothing solid ever came together. That all changed in December 2024, as Disney+ officially ordered a new batch of episodes.

The original cast and crew are now descending upon Vancouver to film a four-episode reunion, picking up with the characters all these years later. And while almost the entire gang will be back together on screen, there’s one original cast member who won’t be returning.

Malcolm in the Middle reunion recasting Dewey

Erik Per Sullivan, the original Dewey, will not be reprising his role in the upcoming reunion, as Variety reports. The now 33-year-old has largely distanced himself from his childhood acting work, and all but vanished from the internet since his early fame.

In fact, Sullivan hasn’t appeared in front of a camera in 15 years, with his last role being the 2010 movie ‘Twelve.’ He’s mostly been absent from various cast reunions over the years as well.

As a result, Caleb Ellsworth-Clark will reportedly be stepping into Dewey’s shoes for this ages-up return of the character.

Beyond the Dewey shakeup, all other original cast members are set to return for the four new episodes of Malcolm in the Middle. Frankie Muniz will return in the leading role, both Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek are locked in to play Hal and Lois once again, while Christopher Masterson and Justin Berfield are reprising the roles of Francis and Reese.

While Dewey will be returning for the reunion, it won’t be the same actor reprising the role.

Joining the returning cast and crew, the family has grown over the 19-year gap. Malcolm has another new sibling, along with his own partner and their very own daughter. The family all gets drawn back together as Hal and Lois celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary.

The reunion is set to begin filming imminently, with Muniz teasing fans that he “can’t wait to get back together with [his] old family.”
