King of Meat dev reveals Wrestlemania influences & future plans

The King of Meat devs have revealed the surprising influences on their colorful co-op platformer, as well as their post-launch plans.

King of Meat is an upcoming hack-and-slash co-op game from Glowmade and Amazon Studios. It drops you and your friends into a survival game show, where you must make your way through deadly dungeons full of enemies and obstacles to be declared the winner.

It’s already been compared to a more brutal version of Fall Guys, but in an interview with Dexerto, studio co-founder Johnny Hopper has revealed some less obvious influences on the game.

King of Meat takes influence from iconic David Bowie movie

“We’ve been making this game for five years now, and when we were thinking about it, we just kind of sat down and said, ‘What do we want to play?’” Hopper explained.

“That’s where it came from. A co-op game, but there was this influence of WrestleMania, and Adam, our Art Director, he’s legitimately obsessed with the movie Labyrinth. So we were like, ‘What would a game look like that was those?’ And then we ended up with this.”

The nods to Labyrinth can certainly be seen in some of the fantasy outfits on display in King of Meat, and it doesn’t take too long to see how the spectacle of the game show presentation takes cues from WWE.

The team hopes this intriguing mix of influences will be enough to get players through the door, but they also have some plans for how to keep the community engaged for months to come.

“We’ve got a 12-month calendar of stuff we want to do. That’s things like cosmetics for your character or dungeon, different assets, emotes, new features,” he continued.

“The best thing about the game is the community it’ll foster. What are those guys interested in? What is there not enough of in the game that they would want? We can be reactive to that and deliver the content that the community wants to see.

Plus, on top of all the official content, players will also be able to create their own dungeons, which will likely only add to the game’s longevity.

There is currently no official release date for King of Meat, but it’s due to arrive later in 2025 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and Nintendo Switch.
