Katie Ledecky, Victor Wembanyama highlight Day 1 of full competition [Video]

The 2024 Paris Olympics are underway after an Opening Ceremony unlike any seen before with a torch relay through the city, a Masked Marauder running across rooftops and streets, and performances from major stars including Lady Gaga and Celine Dion. Sixteen events will award medals Saturday on the first full day of competition at the Paris Games, beginning with shooting, followed by swimming and superstar Katie Ledecky pursuing her eighth gold medal.

Tennis also begins, highlighted by Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz taking the court at Roland-Garros. Among the other sports opening are basketball, water polo, boxing, table tennis, badminton and volleyball.

Here are five featured events on Saturday:

Swimming competition gets underway at La Défense Arena (5 a.m. ET, NBC)

Four swimming events will award medals Saturday, beginning with the men’s and women’s 400-meter freestyle final. The women’s 400-meter race will feature Ledecky pursuing her eighth gold medal and 11th medal of her Olympic career. Caeleb Dressel will also attempt to win his eighth gold medal competing in the men’s 4×100-meter freestyle relay final.

The swimming competition will begin with heats for the men’s and women’s 400-meter freestyle and freestyle relay. Heats for the women’s 100-meter butterfly and men’s 100-meter breaststroke will also be held, in addition to the semifinals of the men’s 100-meter breaststroke.

Dressage at Versailles (3:30 a.m. ET, USA Network)

Dressage has drawn intense scrutiny during the past year for riders and trainers being caught on video abusing horses, including British three-time gold medalist Charlotte Dujardin. Similar to figure skating, horses must perform specific maneuvers and movements that are judged from 0 to 10 based on technique, balance and artistry.

Germany’s Isabell Werth is pursuing her eighth gold medal, while teammate Jessica von Bredow-Werndl won gold at the Tokyo Games in 2021. Steffen Peters of the United States is the oldest Olympian competing at 60 years old.

First medal events

The first medal event of the Paris Olympics is the 10-meter air rifle mixed team shooting competition. Mary Carolynn Tucker was part of the American team that won a silver medal in Tokyo and is back with Ivan Roe, Rylan William Kissell and Sagen Maddalena in the USA’s four-person delegation.

Diving (women’s synchronized 3m springboard), cycling, fencing, rugby sevens, judo and skateboarding are also among the 16 events that will award medals on Saturday.

Victor Wembanyama, France tip off (11:10 a.m. ET, CNBC)

France was the silver medalist at the Tokyo Games and hopes to improve on that showing in front of a supportive home crowd in Paris. With NBA Rookie of the Year Victor Wembanyama and veterans including Rudy Gobert, Nicolas Batum and Evan Fournier, France is viewed as a challenger to the United States for a gold medal and a heavy favorite over Brazil. Names to watch for Brazil are Bruno Caboclo and Gui Santos, the only NBA player on the roster.

Beach volleyball at the Eiffel Tower (8 a.m. ET, NBC)

The Olympic beach volleyball tournament might have the most picturesque setting of the Paris Games with the Eiffel Tower prominently featured in the background.

In Paris, Brazil’s Ana Patricia Silva and Duda Lisboa are the favorites and No. 1 seed on the women’s side. But the American pairs of Kristen Nuss and Taryn Kloth, along with Kelly Cheng and Sara Hughes, are expected to compete for gold. For the men, Sweden’s David Ahman and Jonatan Hellvig are the favorites with Anders Mol and Christian Soru looking to win gold again for Norway.
