James Gunn reveals why Jason Momoa’s Lobo is so important in Supergirl

Jason Momoa will take on the mantle of a new DC character in Supergirl: Lobo, and, according to James Gunn, he’s an important part of the movie.
Momoa famously played Aquaman in the DCEU, closing the curtain on the franchise with his mic-drop at the end of The Lost Kingdom.
When it was announced that Gunn had been hired to run DC Studios with Peter Safran, Momoa sent him one text: “F**king LOBO.”
Next year, the actor’s dream will come true in Supergirl, where he’ll debut (unless he shows up in Superman) as the anti-hero alongside Milly Alcock.
Lobo is a key part of the DCU’s Supergirl movie
While appearing on the DC Studios Showcase podcast, Gunn explained that Supergirl needed something to help transform Tom King’s Woman of Tomorrow comic into a film.
“The truth is that Woman of Tomorrow… the comic is a bunch of little stories. We needed to create one throughline, one three-act story… and so, Lobo helps us to do that,” Gunn explained.
If you’re unfamiliar with Lobo, he’s an intergalactic bounty hunter from the Utopian planet Czarnia, known as the Last Czarnian and “The Main Man”, as well as the “one who devours your entrails and thoroughly enjoys it” – the latter description comes from the translation of his name in an ancient Khund dialect.
He made his DC Comics debut in Omega Men #3 in 1983, but his origin was later retconned and redeveloped. In 1990, he reappeared in Lobo: The Last Czarnian, his own four-issue mini-series which scrapped earlier elements of the character, instead making him more of a parody of Wolverine and The Punisher.

“It’s not an amalgamation of him and Craig [Gillespie, Supergirl’s director]. He’s a totally separate character, he’s himself. I love Lobo,” Gunn continued.
“I always thought he was a great character to adapt. I think he’s maybe, in some ways, the biggest comic book character that’s never been in a film. So I think it was a cool thing to do.”
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly earlier this year, Momoa said: “I just think I’m the right person to play the role.
“If we’re going to typecast me in anything, let’s put me in Lobo. Motorcycles, smoking cigars, partying, dreadlocks… loves a fight, funny.”
Superman will launch the DCU on July 11, followed by Supergirl on June 26, 2026. You can also check out what else is dropping this year with our 2025 movie calendar.
