Human Torch’s debut in Marvel Rivals instantly makes one hero irrelevant

Marvel Rivals’ newest addition, Human Torch, is bad news for another iconic Marvel hero whose pick rate is about to drop.

Marvel Rivals Season 1.5 is now in focus; the new update introducing plenty of hero nerfs and buffs, fresh features, and more. The biggest thing to come from the mid-season haul is the addition of two new characters, The Thing and Human Torch.

Mister Fantastic and Invisible Woman of the Fantastic Four were previously added at the beginning of Season 1 and they are now joined by the remaining members of one of Marvel’s oldest and most iconic teams.

Thanks to the official character reveal for Human Torch, Marvel Rivals players now know exactly what to expect from the new hero and there’s plenty to be excited about.

The flames are about to hit Marvel Rivals in a big way, with Human Torch’s whole moveset focused on this element. His power is so devastating that players are already convinced he will permanently be banned during competitive play.

However, Human Torch strongly resembles another iconic Marvel hero in the game, and Johnny Storm’s introduction could result in this character being picked far less than they already are.

Human Torch is a better version of Iron Man

Iron Man is best used when floating through the air, picking off enemies from a distance and avoiding the chance for any up close and personal melee attacks from enemies.

Similarly, Human Torch adopts this mid-air vantage point. While both cast projectiles, the splash damage of Human Torch’s flames packs a stronger punch. In particular, his Pyro-Prison ability can trap a whole team inside a Flame Field that deals continuous burning damage to everyone trapped within the enclosed area.

Moreover, Human Torch moves around the map much faster than Iron Man and will have greater versatility. When needed to dive head-first into battle or escape the air, Johnny Storm can dive towards the ground with Flaming Meteor, dealing damage to those around but also detonating any Flame Fields in play.

Iron Man’s moveset is much more limited, despite the two handling quite similarly and operating as aggressive support heroes.

Human Torch and The Thing join the Marvel Rivals roster on February 21, 2025 and if early indications are anything to go off, the meta is in store for a significant shakeup.
