In Black Mirror Season 7, ‘Plaything’ catches up with Tuckersoft and its next groundbreaking game: Thronglets… and you can play it right now.
After ‘Bandersnatch’ let Black Mirror viewers choose their fate, ‘Plaything’ hands control back to Netflix. The fourth episode of the new season follows Cameron Walker, an awkward, anxious video game journalist who gets the chance to meet Colin Ritman – and get a world exclusive first-look at his new game.
Only, Ritman doesn’t view it as a game. It doesn’t suit such a “marketable label.” In his words, it’s not a simulation, “it’s actual life.”
Of course, as Cameron grows fonder of the titular Thronglets, babbling and squeaking in unknowable ways (until he works out how to understand them), it makes him go more than a little mad. If that sounds like fun, you’re in luck.
Black Mirror releases Thronglets game you can play now
Thronglets is available to download for free on Android and iOS devices now, but you’ll need a Netflix subscription to play it.
It’s a simple set-up: you’ll start with one yellow creature (known as a Thronglet), and if you do a good job looking after it, you’ll get another one… and another one… and another one.
Think of them a bit like Tamagotchis: you’re basically their caretaker, and if you’re not attentive, they could die. That means you need to collect things like wood and gems and plant trees so they can eat.
However, this is a Black Mirror creation, so expect things to get a little strange (and brutal), and keep your eye out for Easter eggs; for example, the ‘White Bear’ glyph appears in-game, and you may even be able to spot Colin Ritman.
Do you need to watch Plaything before you play Thronglets?
Strictly speaking, no, you could play Thronglets before you watch Black Mirror’s ‘Plaything’ episode.
However, you probably should, as the game includes video diaries from Tuckersoft’s Mohan Tucker and other weird flourishes that will catch you off guard if you don’t know what happened in the series.
