When you think of Minecraft, you likely think of open expanses, plenty of blocks, and ultimate creative freedom, whether that’s exploring the seed, mining, crafting, building houses, or just battling as many enemies as you can when the sun goes down.
However, thanks to mods, this isn’t always the case, and some talented modders have managed to turn the Minecraft you know and love into a stellar RTS, and it’s well worth trying out.
How to play Reign of Nether
To play Reign of Nether, Minecraft’s RTS mod, you’ll need to head over to CurseForge and follow the steps below:
- Install CurseForge.
- Log in or create an account.
- Head to the home button and ensure Minecraft is listed as a game option.
- If it’s not, click the + on Game Specific and either scan for it or manually add it.
- Select the Minecraft icon on the top left.
- Search Reign of Nether.
- Install the Reign of Nether RTS by solegendary.
- Click Play.
With that, your game will load, and you’ll be ready for the RTS. Just click play when Minecraft loads up and you’ll be playing in no time.
What is Reign of Nether?
If you’re wondering exactly what the mod is before you install it, don’t worry, it’s pretty much what it says on the tin.
Reign of Nether is a modded version of Minecraft that turns it into a top-down real-time strategy game, like Minecraft Dungeons. In it, the focus is on combat, with players exploring the world while taking down monsters.
Players can play as one of three factions: Villagers, Monsters, and Piglins. Each has its own mechanics and style, featuring various building mechanics, sunlight sensitivities, and even building restrictions.
On top of this, there are four different game modes:
- Classic: Destroy all your opponents’ buildings to win.
- Wave Survival: Survive waves of enemies each night with your friends or alone.
- King of the Beacon: Fight to take a central Beacon.
- Sandbox: Build a custom map with units and buildings.
You can farm, get villagers to build, set up traps and alarms, and implement various tactics to protect the base you’re building. Fight alongside (or against) Ghasts, Iron Golems, Villages, Pillagers, Wither Skeletons, and really anything you can think of.
In terms of how similar to Minecraft it is, it’s more like Minecraft Dungeons than the game it’s modded from, so expect chaos, tactics, and plenty of battles.
