How to get Kubfu and Urshifu in Pokemon Go & can they be Shiny?

The Wushu Pokemon – Kubfu – was introduced to Pokemon Go at the beginning of the Might and Mastery season, but it wasn’t until the Final Strike event that it got its evolution, Urshifu, in both forms.
The highlight of the current Pokemon Go season was, without a doubt, the introduction of Gen 8’s Legendary, Kubfu.
This Fighting-type creature debuted in the Sword & Shield DLC, The Isle of Armor, where players had to decide between its two evolutionary forms: Urshifu Single Strike Style and Urshifu Rapid Strike Style.
Now that the complete family has joined Pokemon Go thanks to the Final Strike: Go Battle Week event, here’s how you can add them all to your Pokedex.
How to get Kubfu in Pokemon Go
Since Kubfu was recently added to Niantic’s game, it is still a hard Pokemon to get, as it doesn’t spawn in the wild, cannot be hatched from Eggs, and does not appear in Raids or Max Battles.
Currently, the only way players can get Kubfu in Pokemon Go is through the Special Research “Fuzzy Fighter” – 5th part – and the Might and Mastery Seasonal Research – 1st part. Both are part of the Final Strike: Go Battle Week event, which will run from May 21, 2025, until May 27, 2025.
This means that players must get through a series of tasks to earn an encounter with Kubfu. But it’s not just a regular one, it’s a Dynamax Kubfu.
Kubfu and its evolution, Urshifu, are (up to this day) the only creatures to have their Dynamax forms released at the same time as their regular debut.
How to evolve Kubfu into Urshifu
Unlike most of the creatures in the Pokemon franchise, Kubfu has a branched evolution system, instead of a linear one. This means that it doesn’t change forms progressively over its previous stage, but it has two different forms, and players must choose between them.
Urshifu Single Strike Style is a dual Fighting/Dark-type Pokemon, and Urshifu Rapid Strike Style is a dual Fighting-Water-type Pokemon. While their evolutionary requirements are similar – Candy-wise – trainers must complete particular tasks to get one or the other.
- Single Strike Style: To evolve Kubfu into Urshifu Single Strike Style, players must gather 200 Kubfu Candy and defeat 30 Dark-type Pokemon in Raids or Max Battles with Kubfu as their Buddy.
- Rapid Strike Style: To evolve Kubfu into Urshifu Rapid Strike Style, players must gather 200 Kubfu Candy and defeat 30 Water-type Pokemon in Raids or Max Battles with Kubfu as their Buddy.
It’s worth noting that even though players must have Kubfu as their Buddy, they do not have to use the Wushu Pokemon to defeat the 30 Dark or Water-type opponents.

Kubfu Candy
As players cannot find Kubfu in the wild or hatch it from Eggs, it can be quite difficult to gather the (very high) amount of Candy required to evolve it.
The good news is that the free Timed Research currently available in the Final Strike event rewards players with Kubfu Candy and Rare Candy. Moreover, those who complete the Fuzzy Fighter Special Research and the Might and Mastery Seasonal Special Research can get up to 40 and 175 Kubfu Candy, respectively.
How to get Gigantamax Urshifu
Both forms of the Wushu Pokemon have Gigantamax forms, too, where they transform into gigantic and ferocious white bears. However, they haven’t been introduced into Pokemon Go yet.
Once they do, players will be able to easily recognize which is which, as Gigantamax Urshifu (Single Strike Style) gets red patterns on its fur, sharper details on its design, and its headband flares up. Meanwhile, Gigantamax Urshifu (Rapid Strike Style) gets blue patterns instead, more rounded details, and its headband goes down.

Can Kubfu & Urshifu be Shiny?
No, Kubfu and its evolutions – Urshifu Single and Rapid Strike Style – cannot be Shiny in Pokemon Go.
Usually, when a new Pokemon debuts in the game, it doesn’t do so alongside its Shiny version. That way, Niantic can save the Shinies for another special event.
However, it doesn’t seem these Legendaries are going to get their Shiny Kubfu, Shiny Urshifu Single Strike Style, and Shiny Urshifu Rapid Strike Style forms as they are shiny-locked. This means that they are coded to never be encountered in their Shiny color variant
That’s everything you need to know about getting Kubfu and evolving it into both Urshifu forms in Pokemon Go. Don’t forget to check out the latest Pokemon Go events, including the current Community Day and Spotlight Hours.
