How to craft a saddle in Minecraft

Minecraft has finally added the ability to make saddles, after 15 years of waiting and wasting them on pigs, mules, and slow horses.
Despite releasing in 2009, Minecraft hasn’t slowed down, constantly bringing new updates and features to keep players coming back for more. Whether it’s new mobs, highly anticipated blocks, wolf armor, different types of wolf, or just a complete visual overhaul, Minecraft is always bringing something new to the adventure.
One such new feature is the saddle. Well, not the saddle itself, but rather the fact that you can finally craft and remove the item. So, here’s all you need to know.
How to make a saddle in Minecraft
Thankfully, making a saddle is pretty easy. To craft a saddle in Minecraft, you’ll need the following ingredients:
Leather is best found by killing cows. Doing so will drop leather and will get you some extra food. Alternatively, you can look out for Mooshrooms, Donkeys, Llamas, Mules, and Horses, though the latter two you may want to keep since you’ll need something to put a saddle on.
Then, Iron Ingots are smelted using Iron Ore, which is found underground. Mine it with a Stone or higher Pickaxe, put it in a Furnace with coal, and you’ll have an Iron Ingot.
Then, head over to your crafting table and place the Iron Ingot in the bottom middle slot (as seen above) and surround the left, right, and top of it with leather. The saddle will then be yours.
How to remove a saddle
Once you’ve crafted your Saddle you can put it on your favorite horse. However, if you want to take it off, don’t worry about having to get rid of your mount. Instead, use some Shears.
Simply craft some Shears (two Iron Ingots) and shear the Saddle off your chosen mount. Once you do, it’ll fall off and land in your inventory if you have space. It won’t be destroyed.
How to get a saddle
If you’d rather grab a saddle the hard way, then you’ll want to look for chests in the following locations:
- Villages
- Ancient Cities
- Dungeons
- Bastions
- Temples
- Fortresses
- Strongholds
If you are searching in chests, then we recommend looking in Dungeons or Nether Fortresses, which both have the highest percentage of saddle drops.
Alternatively, you can fish them up with your fishing rod, trade with a leatherworker villager for 6 emeralds (steep price for 3 Leather and an Iron, but you do you), or get lucky and receive one by fighting mobs.
What can you use a saddle on?

Saddles are ideal if you want to get around quicker. They can be equipped on the following animals in Minecraft:
- Camels
- Donkeys
- Horses
- Mules
- Skeleton Horses (Java)
- Pigs
- Striders
It’s a wonderful item to have to hand, especially now you can craft it and ride so many different animals. After all, it’ll drastically increase your movement speed… just watch for caverns or large holes in the ground filled with lava.
