Death Stranding 2 is undoubtedly one of the best games of the year, but even its creator, Hideo Kojima, isn’t infallible. Here’s the story of how the Japanese auteur noticed one hilarious oversight.
The sequel to Kojima’s bizarre and moody Death Stranding is finally upon us as players are jumping right back into the shoes of Norman Reedus for a new adventure. This time, rather than reconnecting a post-apocalyptic America, Sam is tasked with venturing far and wide across Australia.
Picking our sunburnt country meant a lot of research was necessary to create an authentic version of the land. While you’re not exactly bumping into the Sydney Opera House or gazing at Uluru, Aussies will notice tons of little details as they play through.
In particular, a great deal of attention was placed in the game’s wildlife. Australia is home to a wide array of species and it was Kojima’s goal to honor that in Death Stranding 2. It wasn’t until he flew to Sydney and visited a local zoo that he realized he’d made one crucial mistake.
Kojima apologizes for hilarious Death Stranding 2 mistake
Given the global pandemic raged on throughout much Death Stranding 2’s development, Kojima himself was unable to step foot in Australia. As he explained in a group interview Dexerto attended ahead of the game’s launch, he had to work remotely by asking others in Australia to “go to the zoo and record all the sounds.”
As we all know, there are lots of animals that are “very unique in the Australian continent,” and even more when “including New Zealand,” as he put it. As such, it was only fitting to include “so many animals in the game.”
However, a day after landing in Sydney for his World Strand tour, Kojima decided to head to the Taronga Zoo. He explained later that day in a conversation with Mad Max creator George Miller how it was only upon this visit that he realized a mistake in Death Stranding 2.
“I went to the zoo this morning. I saw some famous birds, but I realized they don’t live in the right area in the game. So, sorry, that’s a little mistake by me. I found out in the zoo today.”
A vivacious Sydney crowd responded with a wave of laughter as Kojima’s translator told us all the tale.
Rescuing kangaroos from bushfires is just part of the gig for Sam.
Far from a wildlife expert, after playing for over 100 hours now, I couldn’t tell you which Aussie animal was out of place. But Kojima clearly notices these details, so don’t be too surprised if we see a future patch change the location of a certain animal.
