The Last of Us Season 2 is beginning to lay the groundwork for the war between the Washington Liberation Front (W.L.F) and the Seraphites (Scars), but showrunners have confirmed it won’t all be explained until Season 3.
Already halfway through the second batch of episodes, HBO’s adaptation of Naughty Dog’s smash-hit series continues to keep fans hooked. Be it new surprises for even the most experienced fans or just beautiful renditions of iconic moments, Season 2 has certainly been a hit once again.
While Ellie’s plot for revenge is certainly the core focus, Episodes 3 & 4 have started to zoom out somewhat, revealing a larger conflict between warring factions. We now know of the strife between the Wolves and the Scars, but we don’t quite have the full picture.
What does Isaac want so desperately that he resorts to inhumane torture? Why are members of the WLF supposedly defecting and joining the enemy? It’s an intriguing plot layered atop the main narrative, but it’s not one we’ll have fully resolved by the Season 2 finale, showrunners have confirmed.

War between Wolves & Scars to rage on through The Last of Us Season 3
HBO is committed to rounding out the story of The Last of Us Part 2, having already renewed the live-action show for a third season. As showrunners Craig Mazin and The Last of Us creator Neil Druckmann previously said, the story of Part 2 simply wouldn’t fit in a single season of television.
Now that they’ve got the runway to work with, they’re laying the foundation for story arcs that carry across multiple seasons. Chief among them is the war between the Wolves and the Scars.
“What is Isaac pursuing?” Mazin posited on The Last of Us Podcast. “These questions about this war may not be answered this season. There will be some mysteries.”
Isaac is not to be trifled with, but exactly what does he want from the Scars?
Ultimately, fans will indeed get all the answers they’re seeking, but not right away. “There will be some mystery to sit with for a while,” Mazin repeated. However, Druckmann assured, “Now that we’re renewed for Season 3, you will definitely get those [answers].”
“That’s the thing,” Mazin chimed in. “We just didn’t know if we were getting canceled, guys. We will absolutely find out exactly what they’re about, exactly what [Isaac] wants.”
Of course, those familiar with Part 2 will have some clarity on the matter, but not to the extent the showrunners appear to be teasing.
Isaac was a huge driving force in the back half of the game’s storyline, though his time actually on screen was a little limited. With the HBO series, Jeffrey Wright has more room to expand on the character.
From the games, we know he defected from FEDRA to seize control of Seattle, as we’ve now started to see in the show. However, it hasn’t been without conflict, with the Seraphites jostling for authority in the state, and putting up a fair fight too, despite their limited offensive resources in comparison.
For the most part, it’s a conflict in ideology and one that happens to be territorial as well. The Scars have their view of life in the apocalypse, and the Wolves have theirs. Thus, the two sides are all but destined to wage war.
We won’t get the full picture for the war until Season 3, showrunners have confirmed.
As for the particulars of Isaac’s ambitions, well we don’t get a great deal of depth in that regard. There’s plenty of room for the show to deliver a more well-rounded view of the characters, peeling back the layers to reveal his true motivations.
For now, we’ll just have to sit tight and continue watching it gradually unfold, as it’s clear we won’t have the full picture until Season 3 is said and done.
