Hallmark could axe When Calls the Heart and there’s a surprising reason

Don’t panic – When Calls the Heart Season 12 isn’t going anywhere. But once it runs its course, there could be a good reason why the show doesn’t get picked up again.

At the moment, Hearties are strapping themselves in for an “intense” turn that’s set to “shatter” the lives of those in Hope Valley. This looks most likely to be linked with a disease outbreak, but anything is possible in When Calls the Heart.

Besides, there are bigger issues at play. Nathan’s getting closer to nailing Toddy’s crime ring with the unsuspecting help of Elizabeth, and Rosemary’s heading up the radio play of the century while her cast simultaneously gets sick.

These might be tasty morsels to tune in for now, but the binge-worthy TV show might not be so bingeable forever. Season 13 isn’t confirmed, and there might be a surprising reason why it won’t be greenlit.

Viewership is getting worse for When Calls the Heart Season 12

As the weeks have gone on, When Calls the Heart Season 12 has quietly dipped in viewing figures. It’s now trailing behind the average Season 11 pulled in, which won’t be music to Hallmark’s ears.

Currently, Season 12 Nielsen ratings are averaging around 0.09 for its first six episodes, dipping to 0.07 at its lowest. For comparison, Season 11 hovered around the 0.13 mark this time last year. There was an average 1.91 million viewers in 2024, once again dipping in 2025 to 1.5 million (so far).

For context, these figures include final national ratings, including all live, same-day viewing and DVR playback. Delayed streaming viewing – in this case, anyone tuning in on Hallmark+ the day after – isn’t factored in.

Whether this actually leads to a cancelation remains to be seen. Hallmark’s other TV series The Way Home is having much bigger issues, falling to around 500,000 viewers during its third season. If there’s costs to cut and goals to meet, it’s much more likely this would be the fallout.

All good things must come to an end at some point, but Season 12 doesn’t have to be that moment in this instance. A decade of successful seasons says otherwise, with When Calls the Heart still Hallmark’s most successful TV show.

Even Little House on the Prairie guest star Melissa Gilbert is hoping for more, explaining: “That would be delightful, I will keep my fingers crossed. We’ve had this conversation in my family and I said ‘Guys, are we all down if this happens and I go back?’ and everybody said ‘Go go go!’”

When Calls the Heart Season 12 is airing weekly on the Hallmark channel. Catch up with its episode release schedule and how to watch outside of the US.
