GTA 6 officially delayed until May 2026 with release date confirmed

Rockstar Games have finally broken their silence on GTA 6 and announced that it is going to be delayed until 2026.

When Rockstar Games dropped their initial trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6 at the end of 2023, they revealed that they were aiming for a late 2025 release window. However, that is no longer the case.

On May 2, 2025, the iconic game developers confirmed that the long-awaited title is going to be delayed until May 26, 2026. “We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game,” they said.

“With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”

Rockstar also note that they will “look forward to sharing more information” on the game soon.

Take-Two weigh in on GTA 6 delay

The delay confirmation comes ahead of Take-Two’s May earnings call. Many Grand Theft Auto fans had pencilled in the date of the call, expecting an update or perhaps even a second trailer.

Rockstar Games’ publishers had been “confident” that the game would not slip from its initial Fall 2025 release window. That followed rumors and reports that the new GTA title had missed multiple internal deadlines, but was on track for 2025.

CEO Strauss Zelnick did admit that a slip to 2026 was possible, but noted that Rockstar will “deliver an unparalleled entertainment experience” regardless. Following the delay, Take-Two said they support the decision to push the release back.

“We support fully Rockstar Games taking additional time to realize their creative vision for Grand Theft Auto VI, which promises to be a groundbreaking, blockbuster entertainment experience that exceeds audience expectations,” said Zelnick. “While we take the movement of our titles seriously and appreciate the vast and deep global anticipation for Grand Theft Auto VI, we remain steadfast in our commitment to excellence.”

Borderlands 4 recently moved its release date up, with many speculating that it was to avoid clashing with GTA 6. There have been other developers who’ve said they want to not overlap with the highly anticipated title, so they may have to go back to the drawing board.
