Rockstar Games is seemingly developing a mobile companion app for GTA 6, and it could make for a groundbreaking gameplay experience.
When GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 came out, Rockstar Games released companion apps for both open world titles to help players explore the worlds.
RDR2’s app had a real-time interactive map, the in-game Journal, strategy guide, and more. Meanwhile, GTA 5’s iFruit mimicked an iPhone and let players remotely customize and make custom plates for their vehicles in both GTA V and GTA Online, and play mini-games.
On June 30, 2025, players spotted a job listing suggesting that GTA 6 would be the next Rockstar title to feature a companion app – and based on what we know about VI, it could be extremely impactful.
GTA 6 companion app job listing discovered
On Reddit and X, users noticed that numerous job listings had been added to the careers section of Rockstar Games’ website.
In addition to localization jobs, one stood out: Mobile Engineer.
“Become part of a team working on some of the most rewarding, large-scale creative projects to be found in any entertainment medium – all within an inclusive, highly-motivated environment where you can learn and collaborate with some of the most talented people in the industry,” the listing says.
“Rockstar is on the lookout for talented Mobile Engineer with a strong understanding of iOS and/or Android development to help us build and maintain our mobile platform, including our SDK, and build systems.”
Users instantly dissected the posting and determined that this was for a GTA 6 companion app as it fits the description.
GTA 6 will be taking place in a fictional version of Florida called Leonida, and based on the two trailers we’ve seen so far, social media will be a key factor in the game.
For example, the characters Bae-Luxe and Roxy, known collectively as Real Dimez, are described as having a “relentless social media presence” and are shown in clips filming outrageous, viral content for their accounts.
Immediately, players began to brainstorm what Rockstar could be cooking up with the app and how it could impact gameplay in GTA VI.
“Would be cool if we can call for a taxi with our companion app, and the taxi arrives in-game,” one said.
“Hold up this is genius… Would make the social aspect way more workable. Like I don’t want to check a social media app on my ‘game phone.’ Real phone though? Sh*t…” another commented.
“Love to see it and even more excited to see the social media aspect of the game,” echoed someone else.
Social media will play a big role in GTA 6.
Being able to use your real phone instead of the phone your character uses on screen could make for a much more immersive experience. Based on footage we’ve seen, we already know the universe of GTA 6 will have a TikTok-like video app, so being able to watch GTA VI videos on your actual phone could be a welcome addition.
It’s also possible that your phone could be used to shop or upgrade your safehouses without making it a feature exclusive to the app, just a more seamless way of doing it without the need for a controller.
There’s no word yet on what Rockstar will be doing with a GTA 6 app and don’t expect to find out for a bit, as we’re still quite a few months away from VI’s March 26, 2026 release date.
That said, expect to find out a lot more info about GTA 6 in the months ahead as the marketing and promotion for the highly anticipated title ramps up.
