God of War creator is secretly cooking Sony Santa Monica’s next blockbuster

Creator Cory Barlog’s cooking again, and this might be God of War’s next seismic shift or a fresh IP.

The God of War franchise isn’t just successful; it’s a cultural landmark. With the 2018 reboot, Santa Monica Studio redefined action games, storytelling, and what a third-person camera could do.

That entry sold 3.1 million copies in three days and earned a 94 on Metacritic. While David Jaffe kickstarted the franchise with Greek fire, Cory Barlog gave it a Norse soul. And for years, Barlog’s hinted at even more mythologies down the line: maybe Egyptian, maybe Mayan. The man’s allergic to creative stagnation.

Now, the latest update says Barlog’s “next big thing” might not be a new IP at all.

Barlog might be building another god-sized saga

That’s straight from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, who cryptically asked, “Why does everybody think Barlog’s game is a new IP?” Sprinkle in the fact that Barlog hasn’t denied it, and you might just set the internet ablaze.

According to Schreier, the project is going “well,” and the team’s focused. It’s been years since Barlog stepped back from Ragnarok to lead this new game, and signs point to it being deep in development. Some resumes suggest a new IP, but Jason’s comment, and the silence around anything truly original, casts doubt.

If it’s a new God of War, that tracks. Ragnarok left the door wide open. There’s a new god in town (no spoilers), and tons of loose mythological ends to tie up or snip with a Leviathan Axe.

But if, against all odds, it’s something new, Santa Monica could finally step out from Kratos’ shadow for the first time since Kinetica (Yeah, remember that? Neither do most people).

We are thirsty for details, and with Gamescom and The Game Awards still to come in 2025, we might finally see what Barlog’s been brewing.

Whether it’s gods, aliens, or something in between: just announce it already, man.
