Gene Hackman’s most underrated movie is free to stream on this platform now

As the world reflects on actor Gene Hackman’s legendary career, one of his most underrated movies is available to stream for free right now, and it’s well worth your time.
On February 27, news emerged that Hackman had been found dead in his Santa Fe home aged 95. His wife, 63-year-old pianist Betsy Arakawa, was also found dead at the scene, alongside their pet dog.
Their bodies were discovered on Wednesday (February 26), with the Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office saying in a statement, “We do not believe foul play was a factor in their deaths. However, the exact cause of death has not been determined at this time.”
Hackman, who had since retired from acting, won two Oscars through his illustrious career for his roles in The French Connection and Unforgiven. While he’s best known for his intense dramatic performances, he also had a knack for comedy, which he proved in The Birdcage.
Gene Hackman movie The Birdcage is streaming for free now
The Birdcage, which stars Hackman alongside Nathan Lane and the late Robin Williams, is available to stream on Tubi for free right now.
Directed by Mike Nichols, the 1996 comedy is a remake of the French film La Cage aux Folles and follows a gay nightclub owner (Williams) and his flamboyant partner (Lane).
They attempt to play it straight when their son brings home his fiancée’s ultra-conservative parents – one of whom is played by Hackman.
As Senator Kevin Keeley, Hackman delivers a brilliantly restrained yet hilarious performance, playing the uptight Republican senator who finds himself out of his depth.
With tributes continuing to pour in for the late star, many have highlighted The Birdcage as one of his most underrated but brilliant roles.
On X/Twitter, one wrote, “Gene Hackman in Superman and The Birdcage are two performances my mum and I reference and laugh about way too often.”
“Pouring out some liquor and watching Superman the movie and The Birdcage tonight. Rest Easy Gene Hackman,” said another.
A third added, “RIP Gene Hackman. Been in dozens of films I loved but my fave comedy will always be The Birdcage. Won’t ever see his like or Robin Williams again.”
