Gary Dayton Acquires Coherent Source Service to Extend the Legacy of Thiel Loudspeakers

Coherent Source Service has been acquired from founder Rob Gillum by former Thiel Service Manager Gary Dayton, who was originally trained for his position at Thiel by Gillum. Dayton worked for Thiel from 2005-2013, where his role evolved to include service, sales, training initiatives, and new product development, having worked directly with Jim Thiel. Now, Gary Dayton will repair all legacy Thiel loudspeaker models (1977-2012) while expanding to offer additional high-performance loudspeaker service.
Since Thiel Audio closed in 2018, Rob Gillum, the company’s head of its service department, kept going as Coherent Source Service. This allowed many owners of Thiel speakers to continue to receive support, while keeping the legacy of Jim Thiel alive. Now that Gillum is retiring, Gary Dayton will be carrying on the quality repairs and maintenance services of Thiel speakers, ensuring no interruption to current operations.
CSS is located in Lexington, KY, about one mile from where Thiel speakers were designed and built. From that location, Coherent Source Service (CSS) has been stocked with nearly all relevant parts for proper repairs of most Thiel models. CSS also buys, restores, and sells legacy Thiel speakers, and Gary Dayton intends to expand CSS’s repair expertise to include other specialty audio brands.
“Twenty years ago and freshly out of college, I started my career in audio with Thiel as the customer service manager. Small company syndrome (and my propensity to stick my nose where it doesn’t belong) took over shortly thereafter. Over 8 years at Thiel, I worked in almost every discipline from service, repair, sales, training, engineering, and design. After leaving in 2013 to work from home in ‘office job’ capacities for other brands, I missed the factory the most. I may have learned about the industry in the office, but I learned to love products in the lab and in the shop, especially when given the opportunity to roll up my sleeves and do the work myself,” Gary Dayton shares.

“Coherent Source Service can provide expert repair of nearly every speaker Thiel produced, and in most cases, using original parts,” Dayton explains. “CSS maintains new-old-stock of many original parts and has ongoing relationships with original suppliers that can still produce critical parts. In addition to an impressive parts inventory and active supply chain, CSS has critical assembly fixtures, testing facilities, and documentation that make it possible to restore Thiel speakers to original operating parameters. I am looking forward to working with enthusiastic clients from around the world. Our goal is to ensure that Thiel owners can happily enjoy their wonderful loudspeakers well into the foreseeable future.”
