Game dev convinced 90% of games are already made by AI

A Japanese game designer has suggested that up to 90% of games are now being made using AI, with studios using them to speed up development time.
In an interview with Famitsu, Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino discussed the power of AI and the impact it’s having on game development. “I myself am an active creator, and recently I have been thinking that AI is encroaching on the world of creation,” he told the publication.
“Currently, around 80 to 90 percent of code is written by AI and then fixed up and finalized by human programmers. In other words, it means that right now, around 80-90% of games are made by AI.”
Game dev believes 90% of games being made by AI
Hino famously worked on the Ni no Kuni series, which used animations storyboarded and created by Studio Ghibli, the iconic animation studio at the centre of the viral AI art trend. Ghibli’s co-founder, Hayao Miyazaki, famously made headlines back in 2016 when he described an AI-generated animation as an “insult to life itself.”
However, despite the increased presence of AI, Level-5’s CEO believes that devs will need to harness this new technology while maintaining an “aesthetic sense” to help distinguish between good and bad.
“Whether it is made by AI or humans, you need the ability to choose the best ones from a director’s perspective and incorporate them into your work…future creators will need the ability to use tools such as AI as their own hands and feet and to improve their work with an aesthetic sense.”
So, while Hino believes that 80 to 90% of games are being made by AI, he believes a human element is still needed to create them. This is a far cry from Nier Automata’s dev, Yoko Taro, who believes that “AI will make all game creators unemployed,” but no matter how game devs use it, it looks like AI is quickly becoming an integral part of game development.
