Frieren voice actor Atsumi Tanezaki limits activities due to health issues

Atsumi Tanezaki, the beloved voice behind Frieren in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End and Spy x Family’s Anya Forger, is limiting her professional activities due to a recent decline in health.
Frieren was one of the most popular anime from last year and is currently the top-ranked show on MAL, beating the likes of Full Metal Alchemist, Attack on Titan, and One Piece. This is largely due to the show’s lovable cast of colorful characters, emotional story, and fantasy aesthetic.
The most popular character is Frieren, the elven mage and main protagonist, voiced by acclaimed Japanese voice actor Atsumi Tanezaki.
However, on June 1, Tanezaki’s agency, Haikyo, shared an official statement confirming that Frieren’s VA will be prioritizing recovery following her recent poor health.
Frieren VA limiting activities after decline in health
“We would like to express our sincere gratitude for your continued support. Regarding Atsumi Tanezaki, a member of our association, she has been active since last year under the guidance of her doctor, but due to her recent poor health, we have decided that recovery should take priority for the time being,” reads the statement.
“We would like to inform you that some of her activities will be restricted. We deeply apologize to our fans and all concerned parties for causing great concern and inconvenience.”
While Tanezaki didn’t reveal any information on what’s impacting her health, she did take to X/Twitter to reassure fans that she is going to focus on resting in order to continue to voice Frieren and her other popular roles.
She also announced that she wouldn’t be posting on social media. You can read the machine-translated post below:
“I will be limiting some of my activities for a while while I work to recover… In order to continue treasuring the works and characters I’ve encountered, in order to keep working just as clumsily and sincerely as always, I need to be in good health – otherwise, I won’t be able to do that,” the voice actor said.
“So, I will take care of myself properly too… I will!!! As summer seems to be kicking into full gear, please, everyone, be kind to yourselves too.”
No date has been announced for her return, but her agency has emphasized that her recovery is the top priority.
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s Season 2 will be released in January 2026, and a special panel will be held at Anime Expo 2025 on July 4, where Crunchyroll will tease “what’s next for Frieren.” So, Frieren fans will soon be able to hear more about her next adventure.
