Freja is the best designed Overwatch 2 hero for one major reason

Freja’s temporary play test in Overwatch 2 is going over well, with many in the community praising her surprisingly well-designed kit and gameplay loop. A number of heroes have come out since OW2’s launch, but she stands out as the absolute best designed one since OG Overwatch.

Overwatch 2’s next Damage hero is on the way with Freja, the 17th DPS hero intended to have a high skill-ceiling that rewards great aim with her deadly crossbow. With some players criticizing her design and an overall muted response to her kit, there didn’t seem to be much hype for her kit.

Fortunately, Freja’s play test is so far an overall success, with players praising her gameplay loop that combines her precise aim and unique movement abilities. In fact, she might be one of the best designed DPS heroes in the game.

Players are loving Freja’s gameplay in Overwatch 2

On the surface, Freja’s kit may seem on the basic side like Ashe or Widowmaker, but players were surprised at how unique her gameplay felt. Her distinctive mechanics revolve around her right-click and movement abilities which almost makes her feel like a ranged Tracer.

In other words, excelling with this hero actually requires skill, and she’s got enough counterplay to keep her from being game-breaking. She’s exactly what an Overwatch hero should be.

Her right-click causes Freja to aim down sights, slowing down her movement to a near halt as she aims a shot at the enemy team. Firing her right-click will send out a sticky bolt that explodes after a short moment, dealing more damage if you land direct hits.

One of the most interesting parts of her kit that adds tons of depth, however, comes with her “Shift” ability. While it’s a lunge similar to Hanzo’s dash or Tracer’s blink, it also instantly reloads her right-click, allowing her to fire multiple sticky bolts in quick succession.

Combined with Perks which allow her to reload her primary fire or gain extra dashes, and you have a hero that actually has near constant movement, a satisfying projectile to land that deals insane damage, and a high APM hero that players are loving.

“I’ve been a support main for my entire [Overwatch] career and have basically only been able to play Soldier:76,” wrote one player. “I can now confidently say I have found a DPS that I actually enjoy and couldn’t be happier.”

High-ranked support player ML7 also called her “the high skill DPS we’ve been waiting for,” also stating that he “can’t wait for DPS mains to start rolling with this hero.”

Many players praised her “healthy” design as well, with players noting how counterplay was built into her kit with the movement restriction from her right-click.

“[It] makes her incredibly easy to hitscan but also makes shooting a shot easier,” said one player. “It’s such a perfect balance, they did the slo-mo incredibly well.”

Freja is still available to try out until March 24, giving you the entire weekend to master her kit before her official release in Season 16. Check out some tech discovered by other players to give you a headstart on your competition.
