Four Seasons devastating character death sparks Netflix theory

You probably weren’t expecting a character death when you binged Four Seasons on Netflix, were you? Well, some fans think there’s a more secretive reason for why it happened.
Based on Alan Alda’s 1981 big-screen romantic comedy of the same name, Four Seasons is arguably one of the biggest new TV shows to hit the streaming service this month. At only eight episodes, you can easily watch it in one night.
Tina Fey, Steve Carell, and Colman Domingo are just some of the names brought together onscreen, with the series following a decades-long friendship between three married couples that is tested when one divorces, complicating their tradition of quarterly weekend getaways.
This doesn’t sound like a show where someone ends up dead, but that’s exactly what happens. If Four Seasons fans are anything to go by, there’s a solid theory about why it happened. Warning: spoilers ahead!
Nick’s death in Four Seasons sparks Steve Carell fan theory
Nick – played by Steve Carell – is suddenly killed off-screen in a car crash at the end of the penultimate seventh episode, while the group is on a New Year’s skiing trip. For fans, the theory lies with Carell himself.
“I found it a really easy, light-hearted, comedy show about a group of friends. It’s not my usual style, but I thought it was refreshing and nice to see lots of cool actors in one show,” one posted on Reddit.
“It all got a bit dark when Nick died, OMG? I wondered if Steve Carell already said he wouldn’t film any more seasons so they killed him off. What a turn! But I guess his character was a bit messy, an older man leaving his wife for a younger model, and Anne also confirmed in the show that he cheated on her.
“I didn’t feel as though the cheating confirmation was taken seriously enough, and was swept under the rug by the group and not really acknowledged. Just me?”
A second weighed in, “I’m so upset they killed off Nick. So unnecessary especially if there will be another season. I really wanted Anne to get her moment of happiness and start thriving without Nick. Especially finding out he had cheated on her before.”
It’s worth pointing out Nick doesn’t die in the original movie, learning his girlfriend Ginny is pregnant without any audience confusion along for the ride. That being said, there’s nothing to suggest Carell himself influenced the plot at all.
“It is a running joke now that I die in every TV show that I’m in,” Carell told Netflix. “I’ve died in the last two, and now I die in this one. I hope to continue to die in TV shows well into the future.”
Co-star Colman Domingo added that Nick’s death was a “punch in the gut,” adding, “For someone who had divorced his wife and created chaos within these friend groups, it was such a loss because we were already losing him a little bit before, but now we’ve fully lost him.”
Amazingly, writers are already thinking ahead to a potential second season, tying Ginny’s storyline more closely into what we’ve already seen.
“If we did another season, we would want the same group of friends,” writer Tracey Wigfield told TV Insider. “We’d want Ginny to really be tied in there because she and Anne are going to have children who are siblings. And it just gives us a lot to play with in their relationship.”
Tina Fey added: “If we were lucky enough to do more of these, we’d certainly all like to hang out again.”
