Ex-Rockstar dev explains why GTA 6 on PC might release sooner than expected

Former Rockstar Games technical director Obbe Vermeij has explained why the wait for GTA 6 on PC might not be as long as previous.

At the end of 2023, Rockstar Games finally gave Grand Theft Auto fans their first look at GTA 6. Set in a modern version of Vice City, the game follows the story of Jason and Lucia. However, that’s all we know so far.

In the more than 500 days since Rockstar announced the long-awaited game, they’ve stayed silent on things. Updates and new information have come from Take-Two, their publisher, but it has been rather bare on that front.

The silence has left some fans worried that the game will be delayed until 2026. However, the publishers are confident it will be released in late 2025.

Ex-GTA dev hopes GTA 6 PC version will be soon after console

A delay is already feared by PC users given that they’re expecting an even longer wait to be able to play on their chosen platform.

Yet, former GTA dev Obbe Vermeij has some interesting insight. “There used to be way more money in the console versions. Now that that’s changed, hopefully the pc version will be closer behind,” the former Grand Theft Auto dev said, replying to one fan about PC being “late to the party.”

Vermeij also noted that PC has “grown a lot” but that “the bulk of sales” for GTA 6 will still be from console users.

Vermeij ‘hopes’ the wait for a PC version of GTA 6 won’t be long.

As the fans correctly point out, the PC version of Rockstar’s titles have lagged behind. GTA V wasn’t released on PC until April 2015, despite being released on console in 2013.

Red Dead Redemption 2’s PC version follow just a year after it’s 2018 release, so hopefully, if there is going to be a wait, GTA 6 would follow that model instead.

Vermeij has also pointed out that Rockstar will know soon enough if the game is going to need to be delayed, suggesting the end of May as that key point. He doesn’t want to see a second trailer either, as he believes there is already enough hype behind GTA 6.
