Does Chimey die in 9-1-1? Season 8 ‘Contagion’ plot heats up

9-1-1 Season 8 just dropped a terrifying trailer for Episode 15, and it’s not looking good for Chimey. But does he actually die, and why are fans so worried?

Fans are currently partway through a two-episode special, and 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 14 has already been savage. Titled ‘Sick Day,’ the binge-worthy TV show’s last instalment saw 118 get called to a research lab that resulted in a life-threatening biohazard situation.

Buck and Athena are safe, but Bobby, Hen, Ravi, and Chimey are trapped inside. The locked-down lab explosion means our trapped team is exposed to a deadly virus, though Bobby and Ravi seem to get away unscathed. Guess who doesn’t? Chimey, of course.

While Bobby performed emergency surgery on Hen to save her life after a collapsed lung, Chimey’s mask exploded in the process, meaning the virus was completely airborne for him. But does this mean Chimey will die in 9-1-1 Season 8?

Does Chimey die in 9-1-1 Season 8?

Annoyingly, we don’t yet know how Chimey’s fate pans out – but judging by the 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 15 trailer, it’s not looking good.

In the 30-second clip, we hear Bobby saying, “I’ve got two firefighters down in here. What’s the plan?!” This cuts to Maddie explaining that Chimey is already in the second phase of exposure – and that means organ failure.

Chimey can be heard telling his teammates, “I’m running out of time,” and coughing up blood, which is pouring from his nose just like in Episode 14. Buck is then back on the scene, telling the remaining trapped members they’re going to be “pulling out bodies.”

If the bloodied nose wasn’t enough beforehand, the trailer then cuts to Chimey covered in blood, responding to Buck’s callout with “Oh God.” An unknown firefighter is then seen collapsing in front of a lone 118 helmet, clearly distressed. The assumption is that somebody has died, with the voiceover weighing in, “Think you know the ending? You’re dead wrong.”

Fans think Kenneth Choi is leaving 9-1-1

On top of this, fans already had reason to believe actor Kenneth Choi might be leaving 9-1-1. In fact, speculation first started when Choi began to disappear from streaming in Season 5.

As one Redditor posted at the time, “Does anyone know if there was a reason Kenneth was absent for most of Season 5? Obviously I know the storyline but was it because JLH was gone and they didn’t know how to go about the storyline or was it something else? I know JLH was on maternity leave, so I was wondering if there was a reason he was gone too.”

A second weighed in, “I think it was primarily a story decision but he’s pretty private, so who knows for sure.”

Things got back on track over the next two seasons, but now things hang in the balance once again. Clearly, this is a story-driven decision, but there’s no confirmed or public reason for why Choi would want to leave 9-1-1 of his own accord.

Hopefully, things won’t look as bleak as Season 8 is making them out to be. During the mid-season finale, co-star Peter Krause (who plays Bobby) told Dexerto, “I think we’re safe and the whole 911 family will be around. I can speak to that.”
