DJI has released a tantalising new teaser on its official website, sparking widespread excitement across the photography and drone communities. The biggest revelation? The unmistakable presence of a Hasselblad camera mounted on what appears to be DJI’s next-generation drone. This partnership, which has already delivered industry-defining imaging in the Mavic 2 Pro, Mavic 3 series, and the Inspire 3, looks ready to launch the next generation in DJI’s entire drone lineup — could there be the potential for a new era for midrange and compact drones?
Until now, Hasselblad’s camera technology has been reserved for DJI’s premium offerings. The introduction of a Hasselblad camera into into a new Mini or Air series drone could be a dramatic shift, but then we’ve seen how image quality has been rapidly increasing while the size of these craft reduces. Now, that would be exciting, as good as the Mavic range is, they’re still quite a weight in your backpack. If you can recall the GoPro Karma drone this too featured a central camera, although that one was still mounted onto the Karma grip. If just EIS the how will this affect manual camera movement and framing flexibility? Alternatively, DJI might be integrating a hybrid solution — combining minimal mechanical stabilisation with RockSteady’s evolving EIS technology — potentially offering unprecedented smoothness while reducing gimbal complexity and weight.
