DJI has officially announced the Osmo Action 5 Pro, a new action camera aimed to challenge GoPro’s recent Hero13 Black. Packed with advanced features, the Osmo Action 5 Pro continues DJI’s legacy of innovation in the action camera market, offering exciting new capabilities and improved performance compared to its predecessor, the Osmo Action 4.

One of the standout features of the Osmo Action 5 Pro is its ability to record 4K video in a 4:3 aspect ratio at 120fps, a significant upgrade over the Action 4, which could only achieve this at a 16:9 ratio. This provides users with more flexibility in framing and post-production. Additionally, DJI boasts the camera’s excellent low-light performance, with the ability to capture 4K video at 60fps even in challenging lighting conditions.
Complementing its low-light capabilities is a specialized “SuperNight” mode, which records up to 4K/30fps at a 16:9 aspect ratio. This mode utilizes AI-driven noise reduction algorithms to enhance footage shot in extremely dark environments, helping to “overcome the darkness,” according to DJI. This enhancement should be especially beneficial for nighttime action shots, where detail and clarity are often sacrificed due to low light.
Another key feature of the Osmo Action 5 Pro is the addition of a subject-tracking mode, which operates similarly to modes found in DJI’s vlogging cameras as well as certain Sony models. This feature allows the camera to lock onto a subject and maintain focus, adjusting the composition dynamically as the subject moves. While this is a powerful tool for keeping the subject centered, it only supports resolutions up to 2.7K due to the cropping involved.
The Osmo Action 5 Pro also features a 40MP Type 1/1.3 sensor with 2.4μm pixels. This is a significant upgrade from the Action 4, offering nearly four times the resolution while maintaining the same sensor size. It’s also larger than GoPro’s Type 1/1.9 sensor used in their recent cameras. DJI claims this sensor can capture up to 13.5 stops of dynamic range, a feature that should help produce high-quality footage in diverse lighting conditions.
Mounted on this sensor is an F2.8 lens with a 155-degree field of view, providing an expansive perspective for action shots. The lens can focus as close as 35cm, which is slightly closer than the Osmo Action 4, adding versatility for capturing close-up details during fast-paced action.
Battery life is another area where the Action 5 Pro excels. Its 7.5Wh battery is larger than the Action 4’s 6.8Wh, and the new 4nm processor is more power-efficient, allowing for up to four hours of continuous use. In extreme conditions, the camera can still reliably record for up to 3.6 hours at temperatures as low as -20°C (-4°F). Quick charging further enhances the camera’s usability, providing up to two hours of recording time with just 15 minutes of charging.
In terms of storage, the Action 5 Pro comes with 47GB of onboard storage, which can be expanded using a microSD card. Users can also transfer footage using Wi-Fi 6 or USB, and the Wi-Fi connection supports live streaming, adding more versatility for content creators.
The dual screens on the Osmo Action 5 Pro have been upgraded as well. The front screen is now 3.7cm (1.46 inches) with a maximum brightness of 800 nits, while the rear screen measures 6.4cm (2.5 inches) with a peak brightness of 1,000 nits. These brighter screens should make it easier to view in harsh lighting conditions, particularly under direct sunlight.
Priced at $349 for the standard kit, the Osmo Action 5 Pro offers excellent value for its feature set. For $449, the Adventure Combo adds a mini quick-release adapter mount, battery case, and a 1.5m extension rod. 13.5-stops of dynamic range deliver groundbreaking image quality
Osmo Action 5 Pro features a next-gen 1/1.3” sensor with a 2.4 μm pixel size and a high dynamic range of up to 13.5 stops, making it the first action camera with specs that rival professional cameras. Images can be captured in 10-bit D-Log M and support hybrid log-gamma (HLG) high-brightness displays. It can also shoot high-dynamic, low-light video at 4K/60fps, capturing intricate shadow details without overexposing highlights, thereby enhancing overall image quality. Additionally, SuperNight mode with AI noise reduction algorithms can overcome the darkness in extremely low-light environments to yield cleaner and clearer footage.
Extended 4-hour battery life for longer shoots
Osmo Action 5 Pro delivers up to 4 hours of continuous use with a single battery – a 50 percent improvement from its predecessor. This new innovation is made possible with a lower power consumption 4nm chip, a larger 1950mAh battery, and a proprietary DJI algorithm that optimizes for energy savings. Even in temperatures as low as -20° C (-4°F), the camera can reliably record video for up to 3.6 hours. The industry average for action camera battery life is approximately 2 hours. Moreover, the battery can deliver 2 hours of shooting from a 15-minute charge using the fast-charging DJI 30W USB-C Charger.
Industry’s first built-in subject centering and tracking
Osmo Action 5 Pro is the first action camera to offer built-in subject centering and tracking, allowing creators to shoot without a gimbal. Powered with a high-performance 4nm chip and machine learning algorithms, the camera can intelligently detect a subject’s position and dynamically adjust the composition to keep the subject centered in every frame.
Optimized for underwater photography
Osmo Action 5 Pro offers the industry’s deepest waterproofing depth at 20m without a case. The built-in color temperature sensor captures true-to-life colors under the sea. The camera can also be set to start recording automatically while submerged and to stop after surfacing. It also has a built-in pressure gauge to record underwater depth, duration, and altitude data to ensure the user’s safety. Certified with EN13319, it meets globally recognized standards for diving accessories.
Larger dual OLED high-brightness touchscreens
Osmo Action 5 Pro features larger front and rear tempered glass touchscreens upgraded with OLED high-brightness displays. With an impressive peak brightness of 1000 cd/㎡, daytime shooting becomes easier. In increasing the screen size and narrowing the bezels while retaining the camera body’s size, the screen-to-body ratio increased by 16% from its predecessor.
Compatible with DJI OsmoAudio™ connectivity ecosystem
Osmo Action 5 Pro can connect directly to the DJI Mic 2 Transmitter via Bluetooth, enabling ultra-high-sampling-rate audio recording. This setup provides studio-quality sound while eliminating the need for a receiver. When Built-in Mic Audio Backup is enabled, ambient sounds can be recorded to add a richer layer of authenticity.
