Diablo 4 players hope devs overhaul endgame system that got nerfed into irrelevance

Diablo 4 players resent that Nightmare Dungeons have been “neutered” while developers prioritize The Pit in the endgame.
Nightmare Dungeons once played an integral role in Diablo 4’s endgame content. As more challenging iterations of existing dungeons, NMDs were perfect for obtaining better-grade loot, leveling up Glyphs, and earning XP.
The game’s 2.0 update in Season 6 ushered in a range of changes in this regard. For example, The Pit became the place to level up Glyphs; meanwhile Nightmare Dungeons were reduced to areas where players can farm late-game materials like Obducite.
Players have expressed concerns about the waning significance of Nightmare Dungeons since before Season 6’s arrival. Now with Season 7 nearly complete, many in the community can’t help but resent the current state of these specific dungeons.
Diablo 4 fans miss the Nightmare Dungeons of old
One user in the D4 subreddit reignited the discourse surrounding NMDs by stating, “I really despise how blizzard neutered NMDs so bad.”
They went on to question the purpose of the endgame system, noting how much they dislike Blizzard’s emphasis on The Pit in Season 6 and beyond, especially since the latter system runs on a timer and, thus, caters to faster character builds.
The Redditor lamented, “everything now is about the pit and I think that sucks because I like the pace of NMDs way more…”
Several people answered that Nightmare Dungeons now serve one primary function – collecting the Obducite necessary for gear upgrades.
Others agreed with the original poster, arguing that the oft-forgotten dungeons are overdue for an overhaul. One person pondered, “What if Nightmare Dungeons (NMDs) actually felt like a high-stakes, never-ending challenge instead of just another short grind for crumbs?”
Someone else brought up the idea of Blizzard potentially unifying NMDs and The Pit to include a “Dungeon with packs of demons and a boss at the end.”
But for those who prefer what The Pit has on offer, NMDs may be best left as a way to obtain loot and materials.
Because Blizzard has already overhauled the loot system and is at least considering revamping battle pass releases, Nightmare Dungeons could one day receive a new lease on life. Season 8 details suggest that won’t be happening anytime soon, though.
