Clair Obscur Expedition 33 sales hit 1 million and it’s even more impressive than you think

Clair Obscur Expedition 33 has sold more than a million copies just three days after launch, but that figure is even more impressive than it initially looks.

The acclaimed turn-based RPG, which has instantly become a likely contender for awards glory at 2025’s Game Awards, is developer Sandfall Interactive’s debut game.

Sandfall had previously announced that total sales had exceeded 500K less than 24 hours after the game’s launch on April 24.

Sandfall announces another huge milestone

On April 27, Sandfall confirmed the new sales milestone on X/Twitter. “And here we are,” the studio said, adding, “Three days after launch; one million copies sold. Thank you for believing in Clair Obscur Expedition 33.”

While already an impressive feat, no matter which way you slice it, Sandfall confirmed in a reply to its own celebratory post that the one million figure covers units shipped to retailers only and not other means of availability, namely Microsoft’s Game Pass service.

“This number includes units shipped to retailers, and does not encompass our awesome GamePass players. Thank you all.”

Created by a team of 30 over five years, Expedition 33 has received huge acclaim for its take on the traditional turn-based combat formula popularized by JRPGs.

The game’s eight-hour soundtrack, composed by Lorien Testard and available in its entirely on Sandfall’s YouTube channel, has received particular praise.

Set in a world fractured and controlled by the mysterious Paintress, Expedition 33 follows Gustave, the leader of Expedition 33. Intent on discovering the truth about his sundered world, Gustave leaves Lumiere, one of the last bastions of humanity, to get answers.
