Casey Anthony joins TikTok sparking controversy among users

Casey Anthony, a Florida woman who was found not guilty of killing her daughter Caylee Marie Anthony in 2011, has created an account on TikTok. Her first video has caused unrest among viewers and a debate has sparked online.

Anthony was charged with first-degree murder of her daughter in October 2008, and the case continued until 2011, when she was cleared of the most serious charges, with the trial recieving significant media attention.

On July 5, 2011, the jury found Casey not guilty of first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, and aggravated manslaughter of a child, but guilty on four counts of providing false information to police.

In the years since the highly publicized trial, Casey Anthony has remained off social media, but she joined TikTok and posted her first video on March 1, 2025, with other users unhappy that she’s on the platform.

“This is my first of probably many recordings on a series that I am starting,” she said in the video. “I am a legal advocate. I am a researcher. I’ve been in the legal field since 2011. I feel that it’s necessary that if I’m going to continue as a legal advocate, I start to advocate for myself and also advocate for my daughter.”

The video quickly went viral, amassing over 1.4M views and thousands of likes within two days.

Anthony disabled comments on her video, but that didn’t stop people from sharing their distaste about her account.

“Why in the hell is Casey Anthony on my screen talking about making videos because she is now an advocate. No ma’am. We don’t need no advocates… what are you going to teach people to do, get away with murder?” said TikToker Educationincrime in a video response.

Users on X shared their thoughts as well, with many telling Anthony to leave the short-form video platform.

“ABSOLUTELY NOT. We need to shame Casey Anthony right back into obscurity. There will never be enough time passed to erase what she did,” one user posted.

Another commented: “Casey Anthony needs to be shunned off TikTok, and out in public. We don’t support child murderers.”

“Casey Anthony is bold as f**k to go on TikTok and claim she is advocating for her dead daughter,” a third user shared.

For some users, the case itself was long enough ago that they hadn’t heard of it or had forgotten about it, causing a spike in searches about the case and videos and posts explaining the details.

After being cleared, Anthony’s details were not entered into the state’s parolee database, due to threats made against her life. In 2022, she participated in a documentary on Peacock named ‘Casey Anthony: Where the Truth Lies’, discussing her life before and after the trial.
