Canon RF 24mm f/1.4 & RF 50mm f/1.4 L VCM Lenses Officially Announced

Canon has just unveiled two highly anticipated prime lenses, the RF 24mm F1.4 L VCM and RF 50mm F1.4 L VCM, as part of its innovative “hybrid” lens series designed to serve both EOS and Cinema EOS cameras. These new additions are crafted for professionals who need versatile equipment that seamlessly transitions between still photography and video, catering to the needs of photojournalists, production studios, and creative content creators.

Both lenses are part of Canon’s effort to create a consistent, unified lens lineup that shares core design principles. The RF 24mm, RF 50mm, and the previously launched RF 35mm F1.4 L VCM all feature identical dimensions, measuring 77mm in diameter and 99mm in length. They weigh between 515g for the 24mm and 580g for the 50mm, with the 35mm model positioned at 555g. This design consistency is especially beneficial for videographers using rigs or gimbals, as it minimizes the need for frequent adjustments when switching between lenses. Such a uniform design improves balance, making it easier to achieve smooth and stable footage when filming.

A range of features has been incorporated into these lenses to enhance both their versatility and functionality. Each lens includes an iris ring that allows for precise aperture adjustments, compatible with Canon’s EOS R5 II and EOS R1 models. Additionally, users can expect customized controls via dedicated focus and control rings, along with a function button for further customization. These lenses also support 67mm filters, adding flexibility for specialized setups.

Optically, the RF 24mm F1.4 incorporates 15 elements arranged in 11 groups, including two Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) elements and one aspherical element. With a minimum focusing distance of 0.24m and a maximum magnification of 0.17x, it promises to be particularly appealing to astrophotographers, as it captures sharp, distortion-free stars even near the edges of the frame. Meanwhile, the RF 50mm F1.4 includes 14 elements in 11 groups, one UD and two aspherical elements, with a minimum focusing distance of 0.4m and a maximum magnification of 0.15x.

Both lenses are coated with Canon’s premium optical treatments to reduce flare and ghosting, including the Air Sphere Coating, Super Spectra Coating, and a fluorine-coated front element to guard against smudges and dust. The RF 24mm also benefits from Canon’s Sub Wavelength Coating, which manages reflections that arise when light enters the lens at a high angle, enhancing clarity for wide-angle shots.

Canon’s advanced focusing technology also shines in these lenses. Equipped with both VCM (Voice Coil Motors) and Nano USM (Ultrasonic Motors), the lenses deliver smooth, quiet, and precise autofocus, ideal for video work. A twin-focus group design minimizes focus breathing, allowing users to achieve consistent framing even when adjusting focus during video recording.

These lenses are slated for release in December, with the RF 24mm F1.4 priced at $1,499 and the RF 50mm F1.4 at $1,399, making them exciting options for professionals seeking performance and consistency across Canon’s hybrid RF lineup.
