Canon EOS R6 Mark III Rumored Specifications

The Canon EOS R6 Mark III is a highly anticipated addition to Canon’s mirrorless lineup, rumored to be released in the second half of 2024, with the latest expected announcement date in December. Unlike the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II, the information on the EOS R6 Mark III isn’t being kept under wraps, reflecting Canon’s strategy of a regular two-year model refresh cycle.

Canon’s focus traditionally leans towards full-frame cameras before releasing APS-C models. While there are early rumors about the EOS R7 Mark II and EOS R10 Mark II slated for 2025, the confidence in these rumors remains low.

Canon EOS R6 Mark III Rumored Specifications:

  • 24MP (related to the EOS R3’s stacked sensor)
  • Mechanical shutter / electronic shutter
  • No information on still burst speed
  • Improved DIGIC X, no DIGIC Accelerator
  • CFexpress & SD UHS-II card slot
  • 4K120p, Full HD240p
  • Same EVF as EOS R5 (no eye tracking)
  • Improved IBIS performance
  • Improved AF sensitivity
  • Body will be slightly heavier (not noticeable)
  • 3-inch LCD monitor (resolution unknown)
  • No information on AF functionality

The rumored specifications for the EOS R6 Mark III suggest several significant upgrades. It is expected to feature a 24MP stacked CMOS sensor, related to the sensor in the EOS R3 but potentially a downgraded version. This model will support both mechanical and electronic shutters. However, there is no information available on the still burst speed.

An upgraded DIGIC X processor is anticipated, although it will lack a DIGIC Accelerator, setting it apart from higher-end models. The camera will include dual card slots: CFexpress and SD UHS-II, offering flexibility and high-speed performance. For video enthusiasts, the EOS R6 Mark III is expected to support 4K at 120fps and Full HD at 240fps, making it a powerful tool for high-resolution, high-frame-rate video recording.

The electronic viewfinder (EVF) will be the same as that of the EOS R5, although it will not feature eye tracking. The in-body image stabilization (IBIS) and autofocus (AF) sensitivity are said to be improved, enhancing overall shooting performance. The camera body is rumored to be slightly heavier than its predecessor, but the difference is expected to be negligible.

A 3-inch LCD monitor is also part of the rumored specs, though its resolution remains unknown. Despite the lack of specific details on AF functionality, the enhancements in IBIS and AF sensitivity are promising for photographers and videographers alike.

If the EOS R6 Mark III is indeed announced in late 2024, its release is expected in early 2025. With these potential upgrades, the EOS R6 Mark III promises to be a substantial improvement over its predecessor, aiming to meet the needs of both advanced amateurs and professional photographers. Additionally, the potential release of the EOS R7 Mark II and EOS R10 Mark II in 2025 hints at an exciting year ahead for APS-C users.
