Canon boosts EOS lineup with major firmware updates for July 2025 – Camera Jabber

Canon U.S.A., Inc. has announced a comprehensive firmware refresh for several models in its acclaimed EOS camera lineup, set for release on 17 July 2025. The new update brings an array of cutting-edge features aimed at professional photographers and content creators, focusing on performance, security, and creative possibilities. Canon’s move underlines its commitment to continual innovation across both stills and video domains.

Leading the list of new capabilities is C2PA support for the flagship Canon EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II, leveraging the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity standard. This addition means images now embed verifiable authenticity information at capture, bolstering trust in digital content—an increasingly relevant feature for photojournalists and commercial shooters.

The EOS R1 also receives Panning Assist, inherited from the EOS R3, to deliver smoother tracking of fast-moving subjects. This function optimises camera performance for motorsport, wildlife, and action photographers. Both the EOS R1 and R5 Mark II now feature a unique Servo AF [Case Special] mode designed to maintain precise autofocus on subjects behind nets—ideal for sports like badminton or volleyball.

Canon is also addressing the needs of action photographers with improvements to pre-continuous shooting. Users can now customise the number of shots captured before fully depressing the shutter, offering greater flexibility in high-speed scenarios. Finally, in response to evolving European cybersecurity requirements, a network security enhancement introduces a PIN code function to a wide range of EOS cameras.
