Borderlands 4 Switch 2 release date confirmed but it’s not all good news

Borderlands 4 is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on October 3, 2025, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford confirmed, though not without caveats.

In a video posted on his X/Twitter page on July 22, Pitchford emphasized that the Switch 2 version will not “cut anything” from other versions of the looter shooter, including cross-play.

Answering questions from fans following the video’s release, Pitchford clarified that all versions of the game, physical or digital, will require a download on the hybrid console as a result of Borderlands 4 being a “big game.”

The Switch 2’s Game Key Cards, cartridges that don’t contain the game itself but rather, access to an online download, have proven to be controversial with some fans due to concerns about game preservation and ownership.

Likewise, to a lesser degree, requiring a mandatory download makes playing offline out the box without first connecting to the internet an impossibility.

Borderlands 4 will be “mostly” around 30 FPS on Switch 2

Furthermore, when asked about performance, specifically if the game would run at 60 FPS on Switch 2, Pitchford replied, “It was important to us to not cut anything and to support cross-play with other platforms.”

“So, no. It’ll be mostly around 30 fps, with some dips in some intense moments, heavy combats, or if hosting a multiplayer game in handheld mode, etc.”

If that compromise to accommodate the Switch 2’s less-powerful hardware isn’t your ideal experience, Borderlands 4 releases a few weeks earlier, September 12, on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
