Mods for Oblivion Remastered are already popping up mere hours after the game’s release, despite Bethesda clarifying its lack of mod support.
The industry’s best-kept secret is finally upon us. After weeks of leaks from both insiders and Microsoft directly, we now know the Oblivion remaster is real. Better yet, it’s available right now and quickly soaring up the charts as one of the most played games of the week.
It’s been two decades since Oblivion first hit store shelves and 14 years since the last new mainline entry in The Elder Scrolls franchise. As such, there’s plenty of hype around this new version of the classic RPG, with thousands jumping in to explore Cyrodiil again.
If you’re looking to spice things up with a few extra tweaks, however, things are a little convoluted. While Bethesda clarified its lack of official mod support, at least at launch, new mods are coming through with each passing hour. Here’s what you need to know.
The Oblivion Remastered mod situation is complicated
“Mods are not supported for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered,” reads a response on Bethesda’s support page. However, the statement didn’t end there.
The very next line alluded to the possibility of playing with mods installed. “If you are experiencing gameplay issues while playing with mods, it’s recommended you first try uninstalling your mods, then verify your game files on Steam, or the Xbox App.”
So based on their own messaging, while not officially supported, Bethesda is acutely aware that mods are indeed possible to implement within the remaster.
The Oblivion remaster isn’t officially moddable, but that hasn’t stopped players from breaking into the code regardless.
For players eager to tweak the experience though, it’s going to be a little trickier than usual without proper mod support.
As first shared on Reddit, players were quick to notice that new Oblivion Remastered game files can be opened in the pre-existing Construction Kit, established all the way back in 2008. While it’s not all smooth sailing in the early outings, this opens the door for a wide range of possible mods and it hasn’t taken long for dozens to roll out the door.

So far, we’ve seen all the usual suspects from modifying your Carry Weight limit to helping skip intro animations when booting up the game. One particular mod even seeks to revert the remaster back to Oblivion’s classic color grading if that’s your preferred style.
As PCGamer tracked, it was only three hours after launch that the first mod went up on Nexus Mods. Now, at the time of writing, Oblivion Remastered already has over 50 mods on Nexus Mods. So the dam has well and truly busted open.

Ultimate Engine Tweaks
Next, we recommend this Ultimate Engine Tweaks mod to help smooth out early kinks with the PC release. While much of the original’s clunky charm has been kept intact, some newer aspects clearly aren’t intended. This mod will help mitigate stutters, minimize film grain, chromatic aberration, and more.
Color Corrected Reshade
Rounding out our list on launch week is a mod that looks to revert the game back to its original aesthetic. Rather than the more orange-y hue we see in the remaster today, this mod dials up the greenish tinge Oblivion fans will be all too familiar with. Will there ever be official mod support?
For the time being, there’s no clear indication that the Oblivion remaster will ever receive official mod support. Though that’s not to say it’s entirely out of the question.
Skyrim was updated over the years to receive official mod support, even letting players on console browse from lists of popular mods to change the experience on a litany of platforms. Starfield also received official mod support a year after its launch on PC, so anything is possible.
