Battlefield 6 open beta announced with highly requested change

The upcoming Battlefield, commonly referred to as Battlefield 6, made the controversial decision to let any class use any gun and doubled down on the system following backlash. However, the devs have now confirmed the open beta will try both systems to let the community decide.
Up until BF2042, weapons were always locked to classes; for example, submachine guns could only be used by the Engineer class. This promoted a rock-paper-scissors approach, where each class had its own designated role with a weapon to match.
Back in March, DICE announced that they would let any class use any weapon in the new Battlefield, and long-time fans weren’t happy. After doubling down in early July, they provided another update on July 21.
Battlefield 6 beta tests class-locked weapon playlist
“Open Weapons vs Closed Weapons. Why not both?” said DICE in an X/Twitter post. “Starting at Open Beta players can choose official playlists with Signature Weapons locked to class, or not.”
So, we now know that Battlefield 6 will definitely have an open beta, and it’s going to have two playlists: one with the traditional system, and another that lets any class use any weapon.
“When we said we want to work with the community on things and turn it up a notch, we really did mean it,” said Kevin ‘T0TALfps’ Johnson, Battlefield’s Global Community Manager. “The ball isn’t in any ‘sides’ hand, it’s a shared one and it’s passed around. Doesn’t hurt to listen, to respond and talk things out if we’re able to. Long may that continue.”
The news was met with widespread praise, with replies and quote tweets filled with “W”s and thank-you messages. “Great idea, after all, it’s a BETA. The best place to do a test like this on a large scale. BIG W,” said one player.
The response was much the same over on Reddit, with some speculating that the announcement before the official reveal might mean the beta isn’t far away.
But, by no means does this announcement mean that we’ll see the original system. We’ll just have to wait and see what the open beta feedback shows.
We should know more about Battlefield 6 at the official reveal, which is simply scheduled for “summer.”
