Since the pair starred in 2023 rom-com Anyone But You, fans have been rooting for Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell to make it official IRL. Now Sweeney’s engagement to Jonathan Davino is over, could it be true?
Together, they look like the perfect all-American couple, but there’s never been any actual romance between Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell. The Euphoria and Hit Man stars have had rumors swirling since their rom-com hit the big screen, but now, things have taken a turn.
Why? Newly single Sweeney has called off her engagement to fiancé Jonathan Davino, with the internet swooping in to hope their dreams come true. As luck would have it, a few clues have pointed in their favor.
But what is actually going on, and do the Sweeney and Powell dating rumors have any truth?
Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell dating rumors spread as mom denies romance
Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell were spotted together at a restaurant in Dallas just days after the engagement breakup, but according to Powell’s mom, there’s no truth to the rumors.
“They’re definitely not together. It was just, like, she was there [at the wedding] with her friend,” Cyndy Powell told The Daily Mail, adding Sweeney is “really close friends” with the extended Powell family.
Sweeney was in Dallas to attend the wedding of Glen’s sister Leslie, bringing her best friend as her plus one.
Powell’s mom added the rumors are “silly” and there is “definitely nothing going on behind closed doors.”
“He’s the kindest person and he is so others-oriented. He loves his family, he loves his friends. And Sydney is a friend,” she said. “They’ve been friends for so long. They’ve known each other for so long and they’ve both been single and together and with other people.
“They could have made anything happen that they wanted to at any point. But he’s got so many friends that care about him and he cares about, and he’s got a really nice group of friends that they kind of take care of each other. It’s really nice.”
Initial rumors started back in 2023
Around the time Anyone But You was released, the pair were embroiled in a cheating scandal, essentially alleging Sweeney was cheating on Davino with Powell. Speculation died down in 2024, with the pair later joking about headlines on an episode of Saturday Night Live.
But how did rumors even start? As always, it wasn’t down to a single reason. There was no denying the pair’s on-screen chemistry seemed to work just as well in regular life, starting the flames that would eventually become full-on rumors.
2023 also saw Powell go through a mysterious breakup with ex-girlfriend Gigi Paris, with the pair quietly unfollowing each other on Instagram. “Know your worth & onto the next,” Paris wrote in a post caption.
Then came Sydney’s time to host SNL in March 2024. She addressed rumors in her opening monologue, explaining the “craziest rumor” about her life. “That’s obviously not true,” she began, adding, “Me and my fiancé produced the movie together and he was there the entire shoot, and I just want to let everyone know that he’s the man of my dreams and we’re still together and stronger than ever.”
She then asked SNL to pan to Davino in the audience, but Powell was there in his place. Sweeney assured fans that her fiancé was “in my dressing room!” Later in a skit, Sweeney’s character admits to cheating on her boyfriend in a restaurant, telling him, “I cheated on you with my boss and I think we should break up.” Powell then appears to leave with his “baby cakes.”
Sweeney broke off her engagement to Jonathan Davino days before
Obviously, a lot has changed since then. Sweeney has called off her wedding and ended her seven year relationship with Davino, who also served as a producer on Anyone But You.
According to People, the reason for the split is so Sweeney can focus on her work, with a source explaining she is “in the middle of this magical career that she could only dream of a few years ago,” adding, “This is what she wants to focus on right now.”
“She’s exactly where she wants to be. Most people would feel overwhelmed by her working schedule this year, but not Syd. She’s all about working right now and very excited about all her projects. What did make her overwhelmed, though, was her relationship and her wedding. She didn’t feel right about it,” the source also said.
Davino and Sweeney were first linked in 2018, getting engaged back in 2022. “She’s not ready to settle down,” the source added. “They only lasted for this long because it was hard for her to break it off. They didn’t split because there is no love. They split because she just wants to focus on her career right now.”
“Everyone is always so curious about who I’m with and what’s that like, but I think it’s important to have something for me,” Sweeney told Glamour UK in December 2023 about having a private life.
She later told Glamour in October 2024 that she and Davino were “teammates,” explaining, “We’re in it together. And we want to see each other succeed. You can be in a healthy relationship with someone and also be very successful without needing the man.”
