Beloved droid K-2SO finally makes an appearance in Season 2 of Andor, but his introduction rewrites Star Wars history.
As voiced by Alan Tudyk, K-2SO first appeared in Rogue One, working alongside the Rebels in their efforts to steal the Death Star plans.
But he’s nowhere to be seen in prequel series Andor, meaning fans have been patiently awaiting the character’s arrival.
And it happened in unexpected fashion during a tragic scene in Episode 8 of Season 2, via a moment that changes Star Wars canon, but also improves on what we know.
How K-2SO was was born in the comics
Although the droid was first seen in 2016 movie Rogue One, K-2SO’s birth was revealed in a comic titled ‘Star Wars: Cassian & K-2SO – Special #1,’ a one-shot that was published in August 2017.
The plot concerns Andor embarking on a dangerous undercover mission with twin spies Kertas and Rismor. While trying to extract Imperial security protocols, he encounters Security Droid K-2SO, who tries to kill Cassian, until the twins activate his kill switch.
Andor then sets about wiping the droid’s memory, removing enough that he helps them escape, but falling short in that K-2SO still tries to kill him.
But Cassian eventually gets most of the way there, and promises to remove all his Imperial programming; thus beginning a beautiful friendship.
K-2SO gets a shocking introduction in Andor Season 2 Episode 8
That isn’t how the droid is introduced in Andor Season 2, but the change that showrunner Tony Gilroy has made is a vast improvement.
It all happens during the ‘Ghorman Masscre,’ during which Imperial forces take over the Ghorman Plaza, then shoot one of their own to start as riot. Imperial Security Droids are then sent in to hurt and kill the locals, and one of them follows Andor.
Cassian shoots back, but the droid keeps coming at him in a scene that’s reminiscent of The Terminator. Andor’s shots aren’t having any effect, and it looks like the droid might kill Cassian, until a vehicle smashes into the machine, breaking it in two.
Rather than leave it on the ground, however, Andor sees potential in what’s effectively a giant weapon, so has it transported to the Rebel Base, where the droid is fixed up and treated to “Impulse Suppression.”
‘K-2SO’ eventually comes back to life with a series of beeps and whirrs, while Cassian trains a gun on him. Alan Tudyk’s voice then comes out of the droid’s mouth, saying to Andor: “Hello – if I’ve offended you I apologize. If not I’d appreciate you pointing that elsewhere.”
It’s a fun way to turn Andor’s foe into his friend. But this introduction will also have a major effect on Cassian’s psyche, with the sight of his new buddy a constant reminder of the Ghorman Massacre, and therefore why the Rebels must win.
