Adolescence filming locations explained – Dexerto

Adolescence is the biggest show on Netflix right now, but it might surprise you to find that the filming locations were all pretty much in the same place.
Netflix is flying high right now with the addition of Adolescence to the streaming service. It’s become a smash hit, with viewers highly impressed by the use of one-takes to tell the story of a young boy who turns to murder.
There are only four episodes in this drama series, documenting each stage of the arrest, investigation, and aftermath. And with each take being contained to the selected settings, the locations were an important element in bringing this to life.
Here’s everything you need to know about where Adolescence was shot.
Miller house: Pontefract, West Yorkshire
The majority of Adolescence was shot around Pontefract, West Yorkshire, including the Miller family home.
“We knew it was going to be set somewhere in the north of England,” said director Philip Barantini, “and we also knew it would be from somewhere around wherever our Jamie was from, because it would have been unfair to make [Owen Cooper] do an accent.”
The Miller family home, which features in the first and fourth episodes, was shot at a real house in Carr View, Pontefract.
The house is owned in real life by the Fletcher family, who were approached by Warp Films because the house was at the end of a long street — perfect for that tense opening scene where police cars slowly make their way to the house.
Bethany Fletcher told Yahoo UK: “I gave the number left on the letter a ring anyway and before I knew it an hour later the around 20 people had shown up mapping it out, taking pictures, and moving stuff around.”
She also spoke about when Stephen Graham visited the property for the first time, saying, “I was star struck when he walked through our door. He joked to us, ‘I bet you’ve seen me on TV’ and we both told him we were huge fans.”
The school: Wakefield, West Yorkshire
Episode 2 was filmed at Minsthorpe Community College in South Elmsall, Wakefield.

The episode takes place at Jamie’s school, where Detectives Luke Bascombe and Misha Frank investigate the premises and try to find out more information about Jamie and Katie from their classmates.
It’s a huge sequence, with up to 320 teenagers and 50 adults on set to create the atmosphere of a busy, chaotic school.
The episode later ends with a drone shot, with the camera flying over the school and ending in a car park where Katie was killed. This scene was filmed at Minsthorpe Leisure Centre.
Police station: Production Park, South Kirby, Yorkshire
When it came to the first episode, which takes place mostly inside a police station, the crew shot in a 100,000 square-foot studio near Pontefract.

The studio is typically used for rehearsal space for artists like Sam Smith and Coldplay, but it was used by the Adolescence crew to create a multi-layered police station.
“It was a massive, brilliant space, and we were able to build our police station there, and also our [police] interview room,” said Barantini. “It became the nerve center of the entire production.”
Mark Herbert, joint CEO of Warp Films, also said, “The series posed a major challenge for us with the one-shot element, so we needed a studio space that could match our technical needs, but also provide a home for the crew and actors during the whole process. It was a great space to build our sets.”
