A Minecraft Movie ending explained: Can the Overworld be saved?

Grab your chicken jockeys lads – A Minecraft Movie is officially out in cinemas. If you’re asking me, the ending and post-credits scenes are the real reasons to stick around.

How do you make a storyline out of an open-world game? Rope in a star-studded cast for its live-action adaptation, of course. The new movie boasts Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, and Jennifer Coolidge as its leads, introducing fresh new faces Emma Myers and Sebastian Hansen.

While it’s a brand-new story, expect to see a lot of gameplay Easter eggs. Various mobs, creatures, and Minecraft biomes pop up throughout the one hour and 41 minute runtime, with some epic YouTuber cameos sprinkled on top.

But how does our new story end? A Minecraft Movie is full of highs and lows… but trust me, you’re going to want to stick around for the post-credits scene. Warning: spoilers ahead!

A Minecraft Movie’s ending is exactly what you’d expect

Hooray! Steve, Garrett, Natalie, Henry, and Dawn manage to overthrow Malgosha and the Nether Piglins as they try to take over the Overworld. At the last minute, Steve decides to join the rest of the gang back in the real world, resulting in the School of Rock-style jam you need to see.

While the entire town is in the crowd, Garrett and Steve take to the stage (it sort of just appears) in the game store to perform one of Black’s signature original songs. It’s arguably the best of the bunch – A Minecraft Movie probably has enough for it to be unofficially classed as a musical.

But how did we get here? Black’s Steve yearned for the mines as a child, but didn’t get himself in there until adulthood. He accidentally found the orb that opened a portal to the Overworld, and happily built a life for himself there (including taming a wild dog called Dennis). However, he also opens the Nether, being held hostage by Malgosha for hiding the orb back in the real world.

This is where we meet Garrett, Henry, Natalie, and Dawn. Natalie and Henry are new to town after the death of their mother, being shown into their new house by Dawn. Garrett owns a local video game store to bask in his wonder days of playing, and becomes something of an unofficial mentor to Henry. While Natalie starts her new job at a local chip factory, Henry’s rocketry hobby goes awry when a demonstration is crashed by bullies.

Henry’s rocket destroys a model of the town mascot, leading him to notice the orb on sale at Garrett’s shop. He puts the two original parts back together, reopening the portal Steve once fought to close. They’re pulled to the mine, followed by a concerned Natalie and Dawn. This is how the quartet ends up in the Overworld, with a villager simultaneously getting out into the real world.

While the gang starts to fight off the nighttime mobs, Malgosha sends Steve to retrieve the orb for her. Henry begins to understand his natural creativity flourishes in this world, quickly learning to craft. Steve eventually meets up with them and explains the orb’s significance, taking him to his village to stock up on supplies to go to the woodland mansion. Why? They’ve broken the bit of the orb they need to get back home, and there’s only one heavily-guarded replacement in existence.

Introduced to the mobs and creatures of the Overworld, Steve begins to show them what a Minecraft life can look like. Just as they stock up from Steve’s lifetime of supplies, piglins arrive to destroy everything in sight. Malgosha is convinced Steve is going to double-cross her, sending her best-in-command to finish him and the others off. Of course, they get away in an absolute farce of an escape.

However, the group gets split up. Natalie and Dawn, worried about Henry, end up trying to make their own way to the woodland mansion, while Garrett, Steve, and Henry head to the mines. Garrett is keeping the orb hostage so Steve can lead the cash-strapped to a diamond stash. When they get to the Redstone mines and start loading their pockets, Henry realizes he’s been bluffed. There’s no point arguing, though, as Malgosha’s ultimate weapon (essentially a heifer of a pig in armor) is there to kill them. Once again, they escape thanks to a hidden train.

Making up and starting some sort of a bromance, the boys make it to the woodland mansion. The plan is simple – Steve and Garrett will cause a distraction while Henry dodges the Illagers and golem guard to get the replacement. Unbeknownst to them, the distraction involves fighting the iconic Chicken Jockey in a wrestling ring made up by the Illagers. Henry gets the replacement before all hell breaks loose, with Malgosha’s army arriving once again to try and take them down. This time, they succeed, with Garrett offering himself up as a martyr to blow up a bridge with the piglins still on it. The rest flee by flying, with Henry badly wounded.

When he wakes up, things have gotten worse. Malgosha has the orb and is now able to overthrow the Overworld and plunge it into darkness. With Henry’s creativity and Steve’s resources, they’re able to come up with a plan of attack to utilize the golems and wild dogs to form an army to attack the piglins. A huge battle breaks out, with Henry climbing a tower to try and retrieve the orb. As Steve takes on Malgosha, Henry is knocked out of the sky only for Garrett to fly him to safety (surprise! He’s alive).

From there, our team wins and convinces Steve to head back to reality in the company of Dennis. He agrees, and that takes us to our jamming sesh. But there’s another small storyline bubbling away in the background, which creates the perfect post-credits scene.

Minecraft’s post-credits scene is the reason to stay seated

You might be wondering where Jennifer Coolidge fits into all of this. She plays the school’s vice-principal Marlene, who accidentally starts dating the escaped villager. This results in A Minecraft Movie’s epic post-credits scene, where we learn her villager boyfriend can now speak English.

From the second we meet Marlene, her turbulent romantic history comes to light. She’s divorced from a guy called Clementé, and after running over the villager in her car, she asks him out on a date to make up for it.

Despite not speaking the same language, the two seem to have an immediate connection on their dinner date, resulting in the best joke of the movie. “Is he finished?” the waitress asks. “No, I think he’s Swedish,” Marlene replies.

We meet them again in the post-credits scene, where it’s revealed Clementé is actually the art teacher who briefly schooled Henry on his first day. The pair have a fight, with the villager – also present in the office – now speaking fluent English. He sticks up for Marlene against his love rival, with Marlene revealing she can now speaking villager in return.

In a way that only Coolidge can pull off, she recites her love for the villager in his language while keeping a straight face, and the two live happily ever after (okay, just let me believe that last bit).
