A Minecraft Movie breaks another record with ‘Steve’s Lava Chicken’

A Minecraft Movie is making a fortune in cinemas, and now the film’s soundtrack is setting multiple records in the music charts.

In spite of negative reviews that resulted in a Rotten Tomatoes score of 47%, A Minecraft Movie has proved itself to be a critic-proof smash.

Buoyed by rowdy screenings where audiences were shouting and cheering – during which one patron released a live chicken – the film has already grossed over $800 million at the box office, on its way to making $1 billion.

That makes it the second biggest movie of 2025 so far, and the second most successful video game adaptation of all-time, trailing The Super Mario Bros. Movie. And now, it’s breaking multiple music records.

Jack Black’s rendition of ‘Steve’s Lava Chicken’ breaks Billboard record

During A Minecraft Movie, Steve demonstrates an oven that cooks live chickens with lava. While a chicken sizzles in the background, Steve actor Jack Black then sings a song, appropriately titled ‘Steve’s Lava Chicken.’ The lyrics are as follows:

“La-la-la-lava. Ch-ch-ch-chicken. Steve’s lava chicken yeah is tasty as hell. Oooh mamacita now you’re ringing the bell. Crispy and juicy now you’re having a snack. Oooh super-spicy it’s a lava attack.”

Black penned the 34 second song with A Minecraft Movie director Jared Hess, and on the May 3 Billboard chart, the song debuted at 78 on the Hot 100. That makes it the shortest song to crack the chart, overtaking Kid Cudi’s ‘Beautiful Trip,’ which clocks in at 37 seconds.

The same song has also broken two records in the UK, becoming the shortest song to appear in the Top 40, and becoming Black’s highest charting tune when it hit No. 11, surpassing ‘Peaches’ from The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

If that weren’t enough, an official clip of the song from A Minecraft Movie dropped on YouTube on April 9, 2025, and is about to cross 30 million views, making ‘Steve’s Lava Chicken’ an all-round phenomenon.
