Is Sully still alive? Can the diner bounce back to glory? And are Maggie and Cal actually endgame? Strap yourselves in… Sullivan’s Crossing Season 3 Episode 1 might already be one of the best TV shows of the year. Warning: spoilers ahead!

Sully survived the fire in Sullivan’s Crossing Season 3 Episode 1

Sullivan’s Crossing Season 3 Episode 1 picks up with Cal returning to town, making it clear he’s still in a romantic relationship with Maggie. He’s been in intensive training for the local search and rescue team at the fire station, later telling Rafe things are “settled” with Maggie after she went “through a lot.”

A young couple with a baby arrive at the Outpost, with Maggie soon making herself scarce. When he drops his toy fire engine, she’s reminded of the diner fire we left Season 2 on. She excuses herself to Edna and Frank, claiming she needs to pack for her house move.

Meanwhile, Sydney tells Rob that Jane has been asking about him. Rob says he “has enough things to focus on” without carrying on their relationship, still not having given over the deposit to contractors. Sydney thinks he’s making a huge mistake, and tells him.

At home, Maggie finds baby clothes, before Sully – surprise, he’s still alive! – walks in. They try to talk about Cal’s return, but Sully’s sudden cough is too severe to let him speak properly. He claims it’s allergies, saying the doctor previously gave him the all clear.

When Sully gets to the Outpost, he finds Edna has rearranged everything. There’s also a new check-in system and website, much to Sully’s dismay. Rafe and Sydney catch up in a fairly intimate way before they get caught by Cooper, the new fire chief. Maggie visits Cal’s new place, surprising her with a necklace he bought for her while he was away. They kiss, but it’s all too much for Maggie to handle.

Rafe has problems of his own

Taking herself off to the bathroom, she breaks down in tears. Frank takes Sully to work in the Outpost allotment, saying he knows how much the changes have been hard on Sully. Sully replies that he’s not used to having too much free time on his hands, with Frank sympathizing as a retired man. Reading it as implied that Sully needs to retire too, he heads home in a huff.

At the fire station, Rafe properly apologizes to Cooper. He says they can put it all behind them, but also tasks Rafe with working on office paperwork rather than in the field. Maggie and Sydney debrief on the day at the Outpost, with Sydney saying she’s making Rafe a romantic dinner later that night. Frank tells Edna what happened with Sully, saying he “doesn’t think it’s the right time” to be making too many changes. “There’s never gonna be a right time for Sully,” Edna replies, adamant Sully will be just fine.

Rafe arrives home to Sydney, apologizing about what happened earlier. He’s annoyed, passing on Sydney’s prepared dinner to have an early night. She says it’s fine, but is clearly hurt. Maggie arrives home with leftovers for Sully, alluding to what Frank had told them earlier.

Sully says he has no intention of retiring, with Maggie claiming Edna’s just “trying to do what’s best for the Crossing.” “I’m not good with change either, but sometimes it can be a good thing. I wouldn’t be here if there wasn’t,” Maggie tells him.

Maggie reveals she had a miscarriage after the fire

Sully asks if she’s sure about her decision to stay in the Crossing and not Boston, claiming things would be different if he hadn’t gone into the diner that night. “It’s not your fault that I lost the baby,” Maggie reveals in a shocking bombshell. Back at the Outpost, a woman tries to check in, but Sully only recorded the booking on paper. Edna gets annoyed about the new booking system, with the pair having to figure out where she’ll stay.

Rob tells the contractors he’s waiting for the diner insurance check, with them replying new developers might mean he’s out of the running already. New guest Helen is a writer, putting her in a cabin that needs some serious TLC. Helen asks for free coffee to compensate for inconvenience, using it as a plot to see more of Sully.

Maggie opens up to Cal about the miscarriage. “It happens all the time, I’m not special,” she tells him, adding she needs to be alone. Taking herself off, we get a flashback of Maggie in hospital after the fire, with Edna telling her what happened. Rob finds out his insurance claim has been denied, placing the fault with the builder. Lawyers don’t think he has a case, “and even if I did, where would I get the money for that?”

A new danger arrives in Sullivan’s Crossing

After a tense meeting in the Outpost, Helen edits Sully’s statement for the new website. He explodes at her, with Helen saying his outburst is exactly what the piece needs. Maggie visits Frank, who reminds her of the caterpillar-to-butterfly story. “Do you want to live your life in a cocoon, or spread your wings?” he says.

Maggie apologizes to Cal later on, claiming she’s not as fine as she’s led everyone to believe. “I’ve been trying to ignore how I’m feeling when I should have been facing it,” she adds, not wanting to let anyone down. Edna reveals she “knows how hard it is to lose a child” while she talks to Frank. Frank’s cousin Jacob is coming to stay, which delights Edna.

Maggie and Cal plant a tree in honor of her baby, the same way Sully planted a tree when she moved to Boston as a child. Rob despairs over plans, Sydney looks over old modelling photos, while Rafe feels out of place at work, all the while Sully reads Frank his emotional statement.

Sullivan’s Crossing Season 3 Episode 1 ends with new developers moving in, cutting down trees and sticking up signs as they try to claim the land. One reads “Luxury resorts coming soon,” known as Seaside Splendor.
