Abby actor from The Last of Us game addresses show’s biggest change to Joel twist

The Last of Us Season 2 makes a big change from the game on which it’s based, and the actor who originated the character of Abby thinks that’s a good decision.
Video game The Last of Us Part II featured a shocking twist early in proceedings that upset some fans, and angered others. So SPOILERS ahead as we discuss how that changes for the series.
In the game, Abby kills Joel in brutal fashion with little or no warning, and players don’t discover the reason for her rage until much later in the game.
In the show, Abby’s intentions are clear from the start of Season 2; Joel killed her father, so she’s going to kill him. It’s a change that actress Laura Bailey – who played Abby in the game – thinks is a good idea, for both professional and personal reasons.
Laura Bailey approves of change in The Last of Us Season 2
There was huge backlash to Abby killing Joel in the game, with much of it aimed at actress Laura Bailey. “I knew it was going to be intense,” Bailey told Vulture. “I knew it was going to be controversial. But I was still so excited to share it with the world, because I poured so much into that performance, and I was really proud of it. So to get that reaction right away was really tough.”
The negative response included death threats against Bailey and her new-born son, with the actress adding: “I don’t think anybody predicted what the fallout would be from it. I was not prepared. But I don’t think anybody on the team was.”
So Bailey thinks it’s a good thing that a change has been made, and viewers of the TV series are getting more context in the show, understanding who Abby is and the details of her deadly plan before she takes Joel hostage.
“I think that’s why HBO is doing what they’re doing” said the actress. “[So] you’re prepared for it.”
Bailey hasn’t seen the murder in question yet, nor has she spoken to Kaitlyn Dever, who plays Abby on the show. But when Vulture asked if she’s worried the TV depiction of Joel’s death will stir trouble up again, Bailey said: “A little bit.” And that backlash has already begun, with viewers vowing to stop watching Season 2 after the heartbreaking kill.
