9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 16 release date & everything we know about the finale

The contagion storyline is officially over, and it’s left the 118 in its worst state yet. But we’ve still got one more episode to go, and there’s some things you need to know about 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 16.
Hopefully you’ve dried your tears by now, because 9-1-1 fans have been in for a nasty shock. Over the last two weeks, the binge-worthy TV show has been following a two-episode arc called Contagion, focusing on key members of the 118 trapped in a science lab after responding to a fire alert.
An off-the-wall scientist had started it, unintentionally causing the leak of a deadly virus the lab was experimenting on. As a result, Chimey, Bobby, Hen, and Ravi were all at risk… and for one of them, the risk was fatal.
9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 16 isn’t only going to be the last in the series, but it will follow the emotional aftermath of what went down in the lab. Steel yourselves – here’s all you need to know.

Season 8 Episode 16 runtime
There isn’t an official runtime for Season 8 Episode 16 as of writing, but common sense tells us it’ll be around 45 minutes.

Over the course of Season 8, most episodes have ranged between 40-43 minutes, but as Episode 16 is a season finale, we can expect it to be a little longer.
As there’s a delicate subject matter to tackle here (again, more on that later), there’s a chance the finale could be up to 60 minutes to allow for more detail. However, this remains to be seen.
Who just died in 9-1-1?
9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 15 saw Bobby die at the hands of a deadly virus outbreak, meaning actor Peter Krause will no longer appear on the show.

We’d previously seen Bobby, Chimney, Hen, and Ravi locked in an underground lab that had been experimenting with a deadly virus after they went in to put out a fire. Like the team leader he is, Bobby then performed life-saving surgery on Hen when her lung collapsed, and delivered oxygen to Ravi when he fainted after his tank went empty.
He also helped treat Chimney, who had become infected with the virus, managing to slow the disease while sending Athena to track down the stolen vial of anti-viral. Of course, Bobby wanted Chimey to take the vial when it was found, knowing he wouldn’t do so if he knew Bobby was sick too. An expectant dad, there was no doubt in Bobby’s mind that Chimey’s interests were put first.
Fans then saw a heartbreaking goodbye scene between Athena and Bobby through a glass door. Bobby recounted his past of being a recovering addict while carrying the guilt of accidentally causing the deaths of dozens of people, including his wife and children.
He later told Athena, “LA was supposed to be my penance, not my home,” adding, “But then you said ‘yes’ to a dinner invitation, and I started to live again.” Fans then saw Bobby kneel down to pray, dying shortly after.

Fans have been distraught ever since, with actor Peter Krause leaving fans a heartfelt letter after the shocking storyline.
“I’ve heard that many fans are upset by this loss and they have a right to be. It is a loss. That said, it was more than a bold creative choice on a bold show. Bobby Nash was written in sacrifice, and he was built for this. First responders risk their lives on the job so that others can see another day. His story arc honors them,” Krause wrote.
“We at 9-1-1 salute all the incredible men and women who do these dangerous jobs and strive to keep us safe. Our show is incredibly difficult to make at times with long hours, challenging stunts, and elaborate disasters. We couldn’t do it without each other.”
What will happen in 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 16?
Unsurprisingly, 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 16 is therefore going to show Bobby’s funeral, exploring how each of the surviving 118 members deals with his death.
Following on from the lab disaster, it looks as though there will be some interesting dynamics at play. We see Chimey blame Bobby for his own death instead of himself, telling Buck, “He gave his life so I could live… I’m just not sure what I’m supposed to do with that.”
Understandably, Athena is also struggling to cope in the wake of Bobby’s death. While she’s seen stoically walking down the street as part of the funeral procession, she later tells her loved ones, “He’s not supposed to be dead… he’s just left me.”
The 9-1-1 Season 8 finale promises to be an “emotional” one, with the above trailer’s voiceover promising to deliver something devastating.
