Game-breaking Diablo 4 bug has potential to end hardcore runs with no warning

Diablo 4 players can’t figure out why one safe area in the endgame keeps killing their character with seemingly no enemies in sight. If someone were to leave their PC on in this zone with their hardcore run, they could potentially lose several hours of progress.

The Tree of Whispers becomes an integral part of the endgame experience once Diablo 4 players wrap up the story campaign. It provides rotating objectives and bounties with loot rewards, houses a stash, and even features a blacksmith.

In many respects, The Tree operates like any other town in Sanctuary, offering a safe haven for wanderers to gather themselves before heading back out into the wild.

Yet, some players have learned the hard way that this particular locale is not always as safe as it seems.

The Tree of Whispers keeps killing Diablo 4 players

A user who died under mysterious circumstances while visiting The Tree’s blacksmith asked the D4 Reddit community to help explain what went wrong.

The player said they stopped near the blacksmith, then stepped away for a couple of minutes, only to find their character dead upon their return. Unfortunately, the game offered no answers as to who or what took them out.

This strange phenomenon has happened to other players as well. One person in the thread shared a clip of their wanderer randomly dying while searching through The Tree’s stash box. It’s not clear what led to their demise, either.

A few comments noted that enemies who spawn outside the Tree of Whispers can still target players with projectiles even after they’ve entered the safe zone. “It’s [some] weird auto tracking.”

Others posited it may be the side effect of a tempering glitch or a bugged Aspect.

Meanwhile, several Redditors said errors like this are why they avoid doing Hardcore runs in Diablo 4. Wrote one person in the thread, “imagine [if] it was a hardcore run, that’s why I avoid it. If something like this happened… on a character that had hours into it, [it] would drive me insane.”

“Yep. This happened to me too at the exact same spot. I was just glad I wasn’t playing hardcore,” another added.

Someone else chimed in with, “I honestly didn’t know that was possible, but now I 100% won’t play hardcore.”

As of writing, it’s unknown if Blizzard is aware of this Tree of Whispers issue, so players should be mindful of what they stand to lose by entering the area.
