Since battle passes now feel “antiquated,” Diablo 4 developers may move away from the system in the future.
Each season of Diablo 4 has featured a battle pass since the first seasonal update in July 2023, offering free and premium rewards. Currently, users can only progress the battle pass with a seasonal character on the seasonal realm.
Season 7’s ongoing battle pass includes 90 Tiers, 28 of which can be earned for free. Those willing to pay 1,000 Platinum (about $10) can unlock the other 62 Tiers, which include items like transmog pieces and exclusive mount armors.
While Blizzard developers have overhauled other Diablo 4 features, such as the loot system, the battle pass has largely gone untouched. However, comments from one lead developer indicate that could one day change.
Diablo 4’s battle pass may eventually receive a rework
In an interview with Game File (paywall), Diablo General Manager Rod Ferugsson revealed how the team’s opinion of battle passes have changed over time.
It now feels like an “antiquated system,” he said adding that Blizzard’s interested in exploring other ways to “gamify” progression.
Fergusson told the outlet (via VideoGamer), “We do think battle passes are probably an antiquated system now. There are different ways to gamify and to give the players more agency. So I think what I would say is, watch this space for us. I think we’re going to be introducing some interesting things.”
The GM’s words imply the current battle pass system in Diablo 4 will receive an overhaul at some point, though when fans can expect as much is anyone’s guess.
He also mentioned an interest in adding more “flamboyant” cosmetic items to the game, not unlike those from the Diablo 4 x WoW: The War Within collab. According to Fergusson, the Diablo crew ponders possible crossover ideas “all the time.”
Fergusson’s comments align with statements previously made by Lead Designer Tim Ismay, who said the following after the itemization overhaul, “We’re very open to revisiting other parts of the game in the same way.”
Perhaps sweeping battle pass changes will be next up in this respect.
