The Way Home Season 3 finale proves almost every theory is completely wrong

It’s all come down to this. The Way Home Season 3 finale has a lot to answer for… and I can confirm we’re getting plenty. However, that’s not always a good thing. Warning: spoilers ahead!

Ten episodes later and I know less about Port Haven than I did two months ago. The Way Home has laden fans with timelines, plots, and clues, and it’s been difficult to know what really means something.

It’s been an enjoyable ride, though. While we still don’t know if Season 4 is going ahead, the binge-worthy TV show hasn’t been short of jaw-dropping moments. Finally, thanks to Episodes 8 and 9, we’re getting somewhere.

Here’s what I’ll say before you read on: you won’t get all the answers you want, and the door is left wide open for Season 4 to be possible. However, three of my Season 3 finale predictions were spot on.

Alice travels to 1999 in The Way Home Season 3 finale

The Way Home Season 3 finale starts by taking us back to an unexpected timeline – September 2023. It’s the Season 1 scene of teen Kat pulling Alice out of the pond after trying to retrieve her bracelet and meeting Colton. We now see this unfold from Colton’s perspective, who clearly recognizes Alice after Kat rescues her. Season 1 and Season 3 scenes play out together as Colton pieces the teenage memories of Alice to what she’s saying in the 1999 timeline. Colton tells Kat he thinks Alice is “interesting” and “unique,” with Kat thinking it’s weird how similar Alice is to Alice in Wonderland.

In the present, Sam stops by to offer Del, Kat, and Jacob legal advice after what Jacob did at Goodwin vineyard. Louis wants to press charges for attempted arson and trespassing, which has all been caught on CCTV. Alice and Kat leave, finding Elliot at the pond. Alice wants to be taken back to 1999 (in the words of Charli XCX) and jumps, with Kat saying she wants to talk to Elliot. “We will, but Jacob needs you right now” Elliot replies.

It’s a success – as Alice arrives at the Landry house, teen Kat and Elliot are there to greet her. When Alice says she missed them, Kat replies they all only met up a few days beforehand. We see the trio start playing MASH in the barn, with Kat making it clear she doesn’t want to marry any guys she currently knows. This saddens Elliot, who is hiding a “going away to camp” gift for Kat in his bag. It’s a mixtape with all their songs, and she loves it. MASH predicts Kat having one child, who she hopes is a girl.

Colton discovers his past hunch was right

With Jacob in despair over what he’s done, Elliot shows him the clock and what’s in the secret compartment. They find an inscription on the bottom, reading “Time past and time future, and in between is still point of now. Find me there.” Jacob thinks the gold rod is a pendulum, putting it into the top of the clock to get it to swing, and it works.

Alice goes back to the pond, unable to leave before Colton gets there. “So you are who I think you are,” he says. Alice is shocked he recognises her, with Colton asking why she denied being a time traveler in 1974. “I thought it would be easier,” Alice responds. Colton says he has “so many questions,” with Alice replying that he can’t ask them at this time. “The Alice that you’ll get to know in 1999 is a different Alice… she’s me, but an earlier me. She hasn’t lived those visits to 1974 yet.”

Alice confirms 1999 Alice is brand new to time travel and won’t have any answers to anything. Colton asks why she’s here, with Alice responding “I think we’re looking at the reason, this conversation.” Colton asks her to tell him something more, with Alice saying the 1974 trips were special and she’ll never forget them.

Del decides to time travel for the first time ever

Kat, Alice, and Del in The Way Home Season 3

None of this is good news to present-day Del, however. She’s now annoyed Colton always knew Alice was a time traveler, believing Colton must have resented her. Alice tries to convince her Colton would have chosen her over anything, with Del deciding to clear out the rest of his stuff. Elliot opens an envelope that only has a ring inside and a letter from when his mom walked out on him. This has all come from his dad, explaining to Jacob he had no idea a letter even existed.

Max finds Alice in the cafe, who’s trying to set up an old tape player. He says he “didn’t hate” their kiss the night before, with Alice saying the same thing back. Jacob apologizes to Danny for what happened at the vineyard, letting slip it “wasn’t the truth” when Jacob roped Danny into his problems when he first returned. “Only that you did nothing wrong,” Jacob tries to deflect with. Unsurprisingly, Danny is having none of it.

Kat looks through some of Colton’s stuff, accidentally finding the demo he recorded with Alice. It’s picked up the conversation they had in Episode 8 about Colton’s plans to propose, which she plays for Del. Then we get the sentence we’ve been waiting to hear since Season 1 – “Take me to see him, Katherine… the pond. I wanna go.”

Colton learns the truth about his family

Adult Colton in The Way Home Season 3

The trio jump in, but only Kat and Del surface. Alice ends up in 1999, where Colton emerges, shouting “Jacob fell in the pond, didn’t he?” Colton has dreams of this while he’s trying to find him, finding a letter with money from Evelyn in the postbox (alongside a mountain of unpaid bills). He shows up at her house to give it back, with Evelyn explaining the money was for Jacob’s search after the police stepped back. “Seems you know me better than most, even after all these years” he says. Evelyn asks him to stay for a drink for old time’s sake.

Evelyn’s framed “the portrait they found in the attic that summer” in the study, which is of course of Kat from 1814. “I still think she’s the one who saved us at the pond in ’65, the white witch” Evelyn adds. The memories of Kat flood through his head, putting together that not only is Kat a time traveler, but she was who teen Colton saw in 1816.

This also leads him to adult Jacob’s real identity. “It was the pond!” he runs out screaming, which is where he meets Alice. “You know who mom really is?” Alice says as Colton shares his findings. “Alice… are you my granddaughter?” Colton says, to which she nods before they embrace. Colton explains the pond really did never work for him again, convinced no good would ever come from telling Del what it could do.

The pond’s rules are broken once again

Colton and Jacob in The Way Home Season 3

Colton also shares he didn’t think the pond worked for the kids either, assuming he’d done too much damaged by breaking the rules for it to ever work again. Colton recalls Jacob in the pond during a camping trip, who was unharmed. Jacob was “miles away” the day of his disappearance, with his stuffed dog being found in the ocean. “I never thought… why would I?” Colton adds.

Regardless of the pond rules, Colton asks if Jacob ever comes back. Alice asks when it is, with Colton saying it’s February 2000… the day he died. “Jacob will come home, Colton,” she replies, also letting slip he still won’t get to see Jacob again. Colton remembers Kat saying she “lost her dad” which led her to having Alice, understanding he can’t change events to come. Alice cries, asking why she can’t just tell him everything so they can try and stop it. “This road we’re on leads to you,” Colton replies.

“Tell Jacob I love him” Colton says, forcing Alice to jump even though she doesn’t want to. The two tear up as they tell each other they love the other, with Alice calling Colton “Grandpa” for the first and only time. He turns to leave as Alice, jumps before changing his mind and deciding to try jumping himself. “Please take me to my boy,” he asks the pond. Alice, emerges from the pond leaving Colton’s cardigan she had on by the side of the pond. Remember that?

Colton doesn’t emerge in the 1800s, but in the 1990s. It’s the day of Jacob’s disappearance, with Colton finding Jacob on his own in the barn. “Whatever you do, just remember that I love you” Colton says, with the two embracing.

Alice pushed herself into the pond

Alice crouches down at the pond in The Way Home Season 3

Alice arrives home to the first scene of Season 3 Episode 1, with the entire Landry family listening to Colton’s records. We basically learn Alice sees her future self running past the window… and of course, she pushed herself in the pond. Why? To stop her own phone call to Kat, claiming someone else is there time traveling (she also found the cardigan, don’t forget).

Casey gives Jacob his saving grace

Jacob and The Way Home Season 3

Jacob answers the door to Casey, who says “What, aren’t you Landrys used to time travelers at your door?” They’re looking for Kat, hoping to talk about “something important… if it’s the right time.” But when is that? “When someone else has just been caught red handed… maybe you’re the one I’m supposed to show.” There’s a file in the oven, with Casey saying they broke in and put it there when they used it against Louis “a while back.” It’s Susanna’s real will, which was changed by Cyrus’ sons after she died.

Casey explains the pond “did its thing” when they first tried to tell Kat, instead finding out about Louis’ plans for the land from Alice. Casey blackmailed Louis with the real will after Sam said old documents are still valid. “This will get Louis off your back… and stop those letters,” Casey adds. Before Jacob can catch up with that, he finds out the will left Lingermore to the Landrys… but Casey has gone.

Del and Colton get married while Fern drops a hint

Fern and Kat in The Way Home Season 3

Meanwhile, Kat and Del have ended up in 1975, where Colton is set to get married to Del. They watch Colton talk to Jasper about Evelyn and the tape, with present-day Del trying to get closer. Fern approaches Kat, explaining that Kat liked the nickname Kitty “before.” Confused, Fern says “If you don’t know when we met before, then it hasn’t happened yet… something to look forward to, I think.” Fern leaves, singing a version of the same ’65 riddle we heard in Episode 5.

While Kat and Del watch the wedding ceremony, Colton watches Jacob have fun at the 1999 summer carnival. “This is exactly how I remembered it,” they both say to themselves.

Casey is a Landry and Goodwin… but not Alice’s kid

Alice runs into Casey, blurting out she thinks she and Max are Casey’s parents. Casey says Alice is wrong, heading to leave. Casey confirms they’re a Landry and Goodwin, but says they “don’t want to break anymore rules” by sharing more.

Jacob listens what Alice found out about her past self before Kat and Del return. Jacob shows Del Susanna’s will, with Alice chiming in about what Colton learned the day he died. Del remembers how Colton planned to tell Del “everything” the day after, with Kat not understanding why he got in the truck. We cut to Colton on the phone, apparently looking for Kat. In his dying moments, Kat works out Colton was trying to tell her he knew the truth. “And he still loved me,” she cries.

Kat and Elliot become endgame

Kat and Elliot slow dance in The Way Home Seaosn 3

The next day, Kat tells Elliot she loves him. However, Elliot explains he’s been in love with the “idea” of her, putting Kat on a pedestal after being his light during his difficult childhood. “You tried to show me the real you every day but I refused to see it,” he adds. Elliot explains the real Kat is who he saw in 1816, loving her “if you’ll have me.” Kat says she’s also let their previous friendship effect how she sees him romantically. They kiss and make up. Hooray!

Elliot shows Kat what his dad sent him, implying he’ll ask her to marry him one day. “I know that moment will be perfect… that ring is Susanna’s,” Kat responds. Alice is playing the song she recorded with Colton when a text from Noah flashes up. He’s home and has asked to talk, missing her. Alice tells Del she’s not going to give up on her dream of music, like Colton didn’t give up on his.

Jacob disappears and Sam’s identity is questioned

Sam talks to Del in The Way Home Season 3

Inside, the letters Del received are on the table, with a new one from Jacob. He says he doesn’t want to put his family in danger, thinking the letters will stop if he disappears. She gets a call from Sam, explaining Jacob has left. “Well it’s going to be okay, I promise” Sam says as we cut to him clearly standing by the pond. “How do you know that, Sam?” “I just… do” Sam replies, looking over the water.

Elliot reads the letter from his mom, addressed to him. He recognizes the words from a T.S. Eliot book, explaining the author was his namesake. Alice arrives, remembering the girl in 1974 who showed her the same book. “I think I met your mom,” Alice says, with Elliot not able to figure out how a clock – with an inscription from the same poem referenced in the letter – ended up in a wall built before the book was published.

Elliot is the abandoned baby

Elliot in The Way Home

Then he reads the letter again. “I jump for love” is a phrase used, implying Elliot’s mom time traveled too. “There’s only one way she could have done that… she had to go with a Landry,” Kat adds. We see Elliot’s mom write the note and leave it in a baby’s crib (surprise! Elliot is the mystery baby), while the half-mystery couple jump in the pond. Colton finds Elliot and brings him to Del, taking the baby indoors.
