Monster Hunter Wilds’ various biomes are filled with wildlife big and small, including the Sandstar, and capturing one is essential for any Hunter wanting to unlock every achievement in Capcom’s sequel.
Native to the Windward Plains, you’ll need to capture at least one Sandstar during your adventures to unlock the ‘I Caught a Shooting Star!’ achievement, but doing so will require additional items and specific parameters.
To help you cut down on guesswork and aimless searching, we’ve put together a straightforward guide to make catching the elusive Sandstar as quick and painless as possible, starting with an item essential to catching them.
Obtain Screamer Pods
- Head to the Windward Plains.
- Find a Baunos roaming the skies.
- Equip and aim your Capture Net at a Baunos.
- Follow the on-screen input prompt to fire your Hook Slinger to obtain an Echo Feather.
- Craft Screamer Pods using the Echo Feather (automatically crafted by default).
Sandstars are skittish creatures and will immediately run from your Hunter when you get too close. While the Ghillie Mantle is often an invaluable tool in such situations when hunting other small prey, Sandstars will see right through this disguise; you’ll need other means of approaching it
Screamer Pods are the tool you’ll need here, but they, too, will need to be located out in the field. Head to the Windward Plains and look to the sky – you’re searching for the medium-sized Baunos. Using your Hook Slinger on these winged beasts will allow you to take one of their Echo Feathers, needed to craft Screamer Pods.
Locate the Sandstar habitat
Sandstars are located exclusively in the Windward Plains, specifically in and around Sector 13. Get there either by automatically pathing there on the Seikret or by fast travelling to the nearby pop-up camp.
Once in the area pictured below, you’ll want to ensure it’s the right time of day. Sandstars only come out at night, so you’ll either need to wait or change the time of day by resting at a pop-up or Base Camp.
Note that you can only change the time of day in individual biomes after unlocking High Rank in Chapter 4-1.

While small, Sandstars’ nocturnal nature and distinct blue colour make them easy to spot in the sandswept dunes of the Windward Plains.
Upon spotting one, approach slowly and loose a Screamer Pod to stun the Sandstar and then follow-up by quickly equipping and using your Capture Net – there should be plenty of time to do so before the effects of the Screamer Pod wear off.
You’ll receive the achievement prompt for ‘I Caught a Shooting Star!’ after catching them.
Sandstars are small but easily distinguishable during twilight hours due to their distinctive color.If you’re still having trouble locating a Sandstar, leave the area and return, still during nighttime, until one appears. If you’re unlucky, you may need to repeat the process a few times until they show up.
