Severance becomes Apple TV’s biggest series ever amid Season 2 fanfare

The Innies at Apple TV have done it. Their important and mysterious work has officially made Severance the biggest series in Apple TV+ history, clearing Ted Lasso amid unprecedented hype as Season 2 rolls on.

Severance has become a cultural phenomenon the likes of which its network, Apple TV+, has never seen before. Three years after the ominous workplace sci-fi drama began, Season 2 has become a roaring success, skyrocketing the series to the top of the streaming platform’s charts.

According to Apple’s own data, relayed by Deadline, Severance has officially cemented itself as the top series based on the number of unique viewers. Just halfway through the second batch of episodes, with viewership expected to continue growing, it’s surpassed all other Apple TV+ shows on its way to the top spot.

Previously, Ted Lasso held the record for the most-viewed series on the platform, though it attained this spot after three full seasons. Severance has reached this pinnacle in half the time and half the episodes.

Celebratory balloons are in order for this monumental moment.

Severance becomes Apple TV+’s biggest show ever

Although Apple notoriously withholds specific streaming data, refusing to release the exact number of viewers or hours watched, Deadline received exclusive insight as to where Severance may rank in the grand scheme.

On Nielsen’s Top 10 Originals chart for the week of January 13, 2025, which covers the Season 2 premiere, Severance was reportedly the fourth most-watched show across all streaming platforms.

To date, the hit series has recorded 589 million minutes of watch time in the United States alone, while also helping drive new fans to Apple TV+, resulting in a 126% increase in new subscribers around the release of Season 2.

Of course, there’s no quite telling just how far ahead of Ted Lasso it stands, but we know the Jason Sudeikis series was 2023’s most-watched streaming original across all platforms, meaning this is no small feat.

“We have long admired [Ben Stiller’s] extraordinary gift for original and immersive storytelling, and with he and [Dan Erickson] at the helm, Severance has proven to be an extraordinary success and a cultural phenomenon,” said Apple TV+’s head of programming, Matt Cherniss,

“The series has become an obsession for audiences all over the world and we can’t wait for people to continue to experience all the masterful twists and turns as the rest of the season unfolds.”

Speaking of, if you’re just as enthralled with Season 2 as we are, be sure to brush up on the latest theories and get an early look ahead at the next episode.
