5 burning questions we need Yellowjackets Season 4 to answer

Yellowjackets Season 3 Episode 10, ‘Full Circle’, certainly was a full circle moment. But while the finale solved multiple long-running mysteries, there are still a number of burning questions for Season 4 to answer.

We can more or less assume that “It” – aka the Wilderness spirit – is in the Yellowjackets’ heads, manifested as a result of their trauma and mental health (or, in Shauna’s case, straight up psychopathy).

Season 3 all but confirmed this through various revelations, from the fact that the screeching sounds are frog mating calls to the return of adult Van’s cancer, proving she wasn’t saved after Nat’s death.

But there’s still plenty of ground that needs covering. Let it be known that Yellowjackets Season 4 is yet to be confirmed, but it’s looking likely. Once it does, here are five questions we want answers to. Warning: spoilers ahead!

How do they get rescued?

Now, this one’s a biggie but it’s also obvious why we’ll have to wait until Season 4 to find out: they haven’t been rescued yet. We can hazard a guess thanks to the Season 3 finale, however.

If you recall, the adult Yellowjackets said it was Nat who helped them escape. And in the final Season 3 scene, she manages to escape from their camp, head to the top of a mountain, and use the frog researcher’s phone to communicate with the outside world.

After a few messages, a man on the other end finally answers. Chances are, this is the first step to them finally getting out of there. However, this poses another question: how exactly are they going to cover up their crimes?

Obviously, the authorities who find them will assume that they had to resort to cannibalism in order to survive. But there will be so much evidence proving that they murdered when they didn’t have to (including those poor researchers).

We know from the present timeline that they weren’t arrested. All they’ve had to contend with is rumors, and even then those rumors simply alluded to cannibalism. It will be interesting to see how the girls react when they find out a rescue team is on its way.

What happened to the other Yellowjackets?

The Yellowjackets team in Season 2

In the present-day timeline, the only survivors of the plane crash we catch up with are Shauna, Nat, Misty, Lottie, Travis, Tai, Van, and Melissa. So, what exactly happened to the rest of them?

We know from the Season 3 finale that Mari was the Pit Girl, meaning she’s now dead, but Gen, Akilah, Robin, and Britt are also missing from the adult timeline. Plus, if you remember back to the funeral scene in Season 1, there were 18 survivors of the plane crash in total.

In other words, the math isn’t mathing. What happened to the rest of the team? Did they succumb to the wilderness? Are there other survivors we don’t know about, like adult Melissa?

There’s also the question of Crystal, and whether the team will ever find out what happened to her (after Misty backed her off a cliff like the sociopath she is).

Regarding the funeral scene, the writers may have just quietly trimmed the cast. But hopefully Yellowjackets Season 4 can provide clarity on some of these gaps.

Where does the symbol come from?

The mysterious symbol in Yellowjackets

As said, it’s safe to assume that all of the supposedly spiritual occurrences can actually be explained by a) nature and b) their deteriorating mental states. But one burning question remains: where did the symbol come from?

The leading theory is that it’s a marker. Remember, the girls weren’t the first people to inhabit the cabin. There’s the dead hunter in the attic (who we now call Cabin Daddy), and an abandoned plane nearby.

Perhaps Cabin Daddy marked surrounding trees with the symbol as a way to track his journey through the expanse of the forest.

Now, this doesn’t explain how Other Tai was able to find these symbols while sleepwalking. Unless, of course, she’d seen them before – and her fractured mind just dredged them back up while in a dissociative state.

It wouldn’t be the first time the Yellowjackets’ repressed memories and trauma have manifested in frightening ways. Of course, this is just speculation at this stage, and is something left for Season 4 to hopefully answer.

How did the cabin burn down?

The cabin burning in Yellowjackets Season 2

It’s a good question, and one we had after the Season 2 finale too. We know that the girls were forced to move out of the cabin and go full feral after the fire, which is why they’re still living in tents by the end of Season 3.

Many of the Yellowjackets are convinced Coach Scott was to blame, but the third chapter of the horror TV show makes it pretty clear he isn’t to blame. As he said himself, he wanted to stay as far away from all of them as possible.

So, could it be some form of supernatural entity? Anything’s a possibility, but chances are it was a freak accident. In Season 3 Episode 3, the team discovers a cave filled with poisonous gas, reminding us that there are all sorts of elements out there that could cause combustion.

The gas cave might also tie into the weird environmental phenomena we’ve seen, like the red river and the compass going haywire, two other unexplained mysteries from Season 1. Until we get more concrete answers, though, this is all just speculation.

Who was Javi and Coach Scott’s cave friend?

Javi in Yellowjackets Season 2

One of the eeriest mysteries still hanging in the air is the identity of the “friend” Javi made while he was living in the cave alone, the one who told him to stay away from the other Yellowjackets.

Season 3 doesn’t provide answers – in fact, it only raises more questions, as Coach Scott can be seen similarly speaking with an imaginary friend while living in the same cave.

Perhaps both cases were a result of them losing their grip on reality. After all, Coach Scott previously conversed with his boyfriend Paul, having vivid hallucinations of their time together.

But you’ve got to admit, it’s a pretty weird coincidence that both of them had similar imaginary friends while living in the same cave hideout. If Yellowjackets Season 4 gets greenlit, we need answers.
